Careful Woody. I hope the swelling goes down soon so that you are not in so much pain. Whenever you come down to rest I would ice it with an ace bandage over it for the compression. It really works. If you cannot do it during the day then definately do it when you get home. 30 minutes on 30 minutes off. Poor guy.

I'm walking around on it pretty good now. I have the ankle brace on I borrowed from my nephew and that seems to help, so I think it will be fine. It doesn't hurt much at all now. I haven't taken any drugs for it, as Ibuprofen gives me a stomach ache. I think I'll be fine. Thanks for the sympathy and advice.

I've wrecked on my snowboard and had my ankles (both at the same time) swell up just like that. Took about a week before they were back to normal. I went to the doc once about it and was told it was just a bad sprain. What did you do anyway?

Woody_Y, It sounds like you've injured your ankle a few times before. I experienced several ankle sprains through my teenage years and a few more in my early 20's. Each time I was tearing a little bit of ligament and I eventually severed it completely. I didn't know when I severed the final piece of ligament but it was obvious that something was wrong when I began to "turn" my ankle just from stepping on a walnut, pine cone, or some other small object. It hurt like crazy but I had no swelling. That's because nothing was being torn and there was no internal bleeding. With a severed ligament, you have much less stability. This is just a heads up that eventually, you will need surgery with continued sprains. I severed the Anterior Fibular ligament and had a major tear in the Calcaneal. A few bone chips were floating around that needed to be taken out as well. Xrays couldn't hurt and an MRI would reveal the condition of your ligaments.

Jeeze jedi, yours sounds something like mine... I can sprain it at any time, I hope it's not the ligaments on mine as well, but the x-ray certainly showed bone chips and bone spurs. I had an appointment this morning, but had to cancel

Just make sure you see a podiatrist, Johnathan. I got a couple of wacky diagnoses from family doctors. They meant well, but a specialist knows his field. BTW, I was extremely pleased after the surgery.

Sorry Woody that ain't no sprain. Its a break period. Do you have blue -yellow lines shooting up your calf? Thats what happens when I got a sprain. My bros foot looked like yours except for the toes, lol. and it was broke in 4 places

Macho, it still works for the most part. I am walking on it much better today. I'm sure it will be fine. I don't have the marks you're talking about either. The blood has all gone to the underneath part of my ankle. It looks pretty sweet now.

Gentlemen, for the most part, the ankle is a very overdoctored part of the body. When an ankle injury occurs, an X-ray is important to rule out a fracture that needs an operation with plates and screws. It that is not the case, then even after a ligament tear, the geometry of the ankle joint leaves it stable enough to walk on, although an air sturrup brace is often helpful. Walkiing on the ankle prevents the heel cord from becoming too tight, which is what will happen if you are on crutches and carrying the leg around. So, the essence of rehab is gait training to get a normal gait, heel cord stretching done best on the calf raise machine at the gym, and cardio done best for MXers on a stationary bike. Expected return to riding is one to three weeks. For the vast majority of cases, avoid aggressive young doctors including orthos and podiatrists, and MRIs.

I'm with Dr. Mark on this one. I did a 90 degree flexion of my left ankle in April and it still smarts today.

In the past year I have treated at least 100 ankle sprains. 90 were treated sucessfully without surgery. I only operated, reluctantly, on one. He was very pleased. Still not as pleased as the other ninety. The nine or ten that dissapeared all had MRIs and surgery by other people. I am sure that they have done as well as my operated case. But probalbly not as well as the non operated ones and I doubt they ever needed it anyway. So, we have to add ankle sprains to AC seperations, and fractured collar bones for things that are best left alone. There is no crime il allowing natural healing to take place. Even in this post modern computer age with lazers, MRIs and other gizmos.

Dr. Mark, Do the ligaments actually grow back all the way when a tear happens? Mine totally severed after several sprains. Surgery put it back together and I love it. I admit, I went several years with it severed because I didn't know. It was WONDERFUL having a normal ankle again after living with one so unstable.

I go back to the Ortho tomorrow for my broken ankle from THREE YEARS AGO!!! After x-rays looks like I will go under the knife. The bones never healed properly. They are talking about grinding and shaving bones and possibly reconnecting torn/missing ligaments? OUCH. Guess I find out the good news tomorrow. Three words for dirt bikers..... SIDI FORCE BOOTS.....
