Default Calcium Supplement

Dr. Mark,
I am taking a 500mg calcium tablet daily to help with bone regeneration. However, I started wondering about the extra calcium that my body might not absorb. Should I be concerned about kidney stones developing or anything of that nature? Should I drink additional water or anything? I just got curious about any side effects.
Thanks.

No, 500mg is not too much and isn't even close too being there. If you do take too much, it can lead to kidney damage. I believe too much is closer to 2,000mg and the recommended is somewhere around 1,000mg a day. Not positive on those numbers, but right now you are fine

When I broke my talus bone, the doctor wanted me taking 2g (2,000mg) of calcium a day. I did it for nine months or so and didn't have any adverse reactions from it.

Everyone is different,, I took calcium supplements,,, not sure the mg's,, back when I was playing league basket ball back when I was in my late 20s for a couple years and ended up with kidney stones, I quit, but had re-occuring stones twice since about 5 years apart... I also did bruise my left kidney pretty bad in a bike crash in my mid 20s which may have contributed.
