Just wanted to know if anyone had an acl(knee) injury and opted to have surgery and how long did it take to recover from the surgery, was the surgery painful etc.... I tore my acl this past summer by landing a tabletop short and decided not to get the surgery. I've been rehibiltating my knee since the accident and it feels pretty strong. 85% Strong. I got back on my bike 2 months after the injury with a pair of new asterisks knee braces and feel confident enough with them on, to race this summer. I'm opting for the surgery next winter or if I reinjure it racing. Hopefully next winter instead of the latter.

Had a knee reconstruction including ACL repair (back in the day Had 2 more scopes over the years on the same knee for more ligament and cartilage damage. Scopes are the way to go. About 8-10 weeks for 80% recovery (good enough to ride). Last edited by pragmatic393; 02-03-2004 at 09:32 PM.

I grew up in Park City Utah a ski town. The torn ACL is the most common skiing injury. Almost everyone I know has had the surgery. Get it scoped. Cause you will not have to worry about it after that. Rehab anywhere from 6-10 weeks depending on how hard you want to push yourself. Oh yeah if you can travel to a ski town and get it done. The doctors there have alot of practice with blown ACLs.

My Doc told me it'd take 6months for total recovery. Thats why I was thinking winter time instead of summertime. Fun in the sun, splinter in the winter. P.S. Thanks for the advice about the ski town, it just happens a bunch of us have a house up in Killington VT that we rent every winter....I'll look into some doctors up there...Thanks

The surgery I had used a graft from the patella tendon to make the new acl...three screws and some carpentry work completed the task...substantial pain initially...expect a morphine drip and expect to wake up in a motion machine (the machine from hell) expect a long rehab...6 months would be fast for full recovery Bob

Good luck with it. I've moved this to the fitness and recovery forum for hopefully better exposure.

I didn't have the knee surgery I had the shoulder surgery. As far as recovery time it all depends on which surgery you have, invasive or scope. There are advantages to both, scoped knees(or shoulders) tend to allow for faster recovery, but, the scope procedure is limited in how damage the surgeon can detect inside. Recovery longer for open surgery, but, surgeon gets to see exactly the damage. I opted for open based on what my doctor told me about the two different procedures, for me it was right thing to do ,but it took at least 9 months to feel totally right, maybe a bit more. You should deffinitely talk to your surgeon or doctor about the two procedures.

I didn’t tear my ACL, but I know about knee surgery. I severed my MCL, PCL and meniscus tissue (away from the bone) in a soccer injury a few years back. It was on a wet field; another player executed a slide tackle, but his legs caught me right below the knee. My cleet got stuck in the ground, head over....nothing. My foot was still flat on the ground bending my knee completely backwards and folding outward. Loud snapping noise, instant pain, no weight bearing, swelling. I went straight to the doctor. 15 Total months healing time, 12 months post surgery was spent doing physical therapy 2.5-3hrs per day, 6days/week. I couldn’t run or do any extra circular activities during this time either. The Docs gave me a 60% chance for full recovery, most of that depending on if my cadaver MCL and makeshift PCL (consisting of part of my hamstring muscle taken from the “good” leg) would grow to the bone. After your ACL is repaired the normal recovery period is about 6 months. Sorry, but that's what the Doc's say. I started putting a little weight on mine after about 2 weeks against the Dr's recommendations, but I have healed with 98% strength and 96% range of motion. I'm not saying that you should start doing jumping jacks or go jogging, but try to work on getting the motion back and then MAYBE putting a LITTLE (10%) weight on it. Getting the motion back is critical in the first stages of recovery if you decide to do it. Good luck.

Actuallly the house we rent is in Pittsfield. Its on Tozier Lane right across from the Clear River Inn. The house is used as a hunting club during the summer. The place is called Tozier Camp. It's a blast, at least what I remember of it. Its usually a blur after the weekends spent up there. Small world.........
