Question Ankle support

I did a search for ankle support here and found a little info about boots. But no brace info.

Does any one here use a brace under their mx boots? Or is there a boot that out shines all others for ankle support so you don't need to use a brace.

This is for my husband who has injured his ankle numerous times riding. Not a twist, but from his foot over extending upward.

We have decided he needs more protection but its hard to find where to best lay down the $.

Boot or brace?

Both?

Any suggestions on brands?

Thanks

What boots is he running now?

Bates wears a lace up type brace under his boots for this exact reason. I had surgery on my ankle due to this exact thing too, although, mine was caused initially from playing a lot of basketball in my youth. MX just gave it that final nudge to get it fixed.

Now honestly, Gaerne SG10's would help. The new Scott Genius would also (spendy, but more than likely well worth it).

I have A-Star Tech-8's and they BLOW in this area. The other thing he needs to do is practice moving his feet around so that when he lands, he's not on the balls of his feet. It is actually taught that you should have them there so they can help with the suspension, but SCREW that. I've hurt my ankles 100 too many times following that advise. Instead I try and place my foot closer to the middle so there isn't as much leverage to break my foot off.

I hope that helps -- Also, the type of brace that my buddy bates wears are really the only kind I can think of that would really fit under the boot.

Whats bump mean?? I always see that in other threads

Well you could just buy 500$ boots...or you could just buy the buy the 25$ ankle brace made by sixsixone

btw the ankle brace i mentioned does not interfere with boot fit

Having 2 bad ankles from football and soccer I twist and sprain my ankles just walking down the sidewalk or in grassy fields. Ive always worn ankles braces with my boots. Even landing hard would cause my ankles to hurt. Side note...for big jumps with hard landings DONT stand on the balls of your feet, but towards the center to heal area. Anyways, about 2 years ago I purchased Oxtar boots and havent had to wear my braces since. Ive overshot 50 ft tables and I could feel my ankles extending without any pain Id look into Oxtars, Sidis Gaernes or the new Scoots-def worth th.e money!

he is running something that cost around $150. I don't know brand, he doesn't either and they are far away right now for us to go look. Nothing fancy, for sure.

Ok so out of the ones mentioned above Doc you wear these Oxtars you say they work well...do they stiffen the up down motion of the foot and side to side?

Woody have you worn any boots that helped stiffen the up down motion?

Hey Keeto..... I don't know if I missed it somewhere else.. bu I was wondering exactly how you fell when you broke your ankle. I know it doesn't take much huh?

Not to make you relive it ( ) or anything, but I was wondering if you would share that?

The brace called "defender" in the ankle drop down menu

Here you go Jen. I just posted the update in the general thread. It has the cause in the thread but I still do not know what caused the crash. I just started swapping and couldn't get it under control and it dug in and tossed me over the bars - I just landed on it wrong. I'm not sure if a better pair of boots would have prevented this but it may have kept my ankle from rolling under like it did.

I would look into the top end Sidi's also. When I worked at the Honda store the Sidi Rep gave me a nice demo on that very thing w/ those boots... They are top notch in that very area. I would try them on first though as they tend to run a bit narrow..

mxmama, 1st off get him some REAL boots.

2nd, that ankle brace is the exact one I wore after my ankle surgery. It works well. I couldn't get my boot on over the top of it, but if you bought the boot that would fit over it, it would more than likely work.

Interesting Woody! I'll have to check into it once I am released to ride again. I'm sure my ankle will be weak but the good thing is, they screwed it back on GOOD! I'll just bend or strip a screw before I break that ankle again!

ha ha, I'm sure you'll probably get one of those from your doc. That's where I got mine from. They work really well. Also, let me note, the boots I was wearing were Tech-8's and I wanted to wear the bootie, so they didn't fit. don't wear the bootie and they would have been fine.

Im all confrused!!
is the "bootie" the "brace"?

So if you couldn't fit your boot on all the way, how did you wear the brace when you rode?
