I thought I misread you last night but see you corrected it this morning. The doc told me the two long screws would be in for 8 weeks before he took them out and it's been 3-1/2 weeks since the operation and I go back to see him and schedule the removal in 4 weeks which Dr. Mark agreed on. I was lucky and got the best Sports Ortho Doctor in North Texas when I was in the ER - He just happened to be on call. Someone was looking out for me!

Dr. Mark, is it normal for a break like this to be difficult to perform the ankle reduction at the ER? When I got to the hospital from the small town ER, my doctor was really upset that they had sent me 80 miles with my ankle not reduced. He then tried himself and it just kept jumping out so he had to do the surgery that night (which I am glad of!).

Ekholm, thanks! Getting better every day!

An orthopaedic guy like myself would have perfomed a provisional reduction in the ER, just to unkink the arteries, veins, and nerves, in anticipation of definitive surgery later in the day.

For the record, there is no place for treatment of this injury without appropriate use of plates and screws in Western Countries.

I think that that action is too much to expect from an ER doctor unless he/she had military experience.

The ER doctor tried the reduction then the Ortho Doc came in and was wanting to reduce it to get a good pulse (was very weak) but even he had no luck in holding it there while they applied the cast. He wanted to wait a couple of days for the swelling to go down before doing surgery but had to get the blood flow corrected ASAP so he called the OR team in immediately.

I am not a physician but I want to thank Char for her knowledge at the track. The first thing she did was cut my sock off and check for a pulse. You did good gurl! I wouldn't have thought of that.

I'm just glad all that money BBAHC spent on training me didn't go to waste.

I just wanted to make sure there was at least some blood flow before we splinted it. No blood flow is not a good thing.

More than anything, I'm just glad you're ok.

Got an update. Went to the doctor yesterday and he said everything is ligned up good so he is going to remove the two augers (screws) that go through my tib and Fib next Tuesday, then I can start putting weight on it. The downside is, the Fibula is not healing as fast as he would have liked to see. There is a gap (not seen in the x-ray) that needs to be filled in with a hard calcium deposit and right now it is still soft. He said he would give it two months and if it is not completely filled in at that point, he would put a bone stimulator on to help it along. The good thing is, that bone has a plate and 7 screws so it will not be moving. The doc is hoping that once I get pressure back on that leg, it will help the bone heal faster.

Dr. Mark, I'm sure you have had patients in the past like this. What am I looking at as far as being able to throw the cruthes down and walk? How much PT will I have to have, if any? Thanks!

Had my surgery Tuesday to remove the two augers and now just waiting for the incision to heal and swelling to reduce some then I will be walking in no time at all!

I actually took one step last night - man, it's like learning to walk all over again! Doc said I should be able to get rid of the crutches and walking boot in two weeks.

Dr. Mark, I would have posted the x-rays up but had no way to get copies from his office. He answered all my questions though. No PT needed! YAY! Thanks for your input on my injury.

Riding is out until about mid-October but it wont be long. I'll just be happy to walk on both feet again!

That's GREAT NEWS, Keeto!
It's been a LONG time for you and I commend you on your positive attitude. I tend to get a little sour during my recoveries. I'm learning from you and Motoman, though!

Jedi, it's all about positive attitude bro. Life is too short to be upset about something you can't change. Thanks again or being there for me.

Char, get ready to ride this winter! I got some miles to catch up on!

It sure is, that coupled with the errrrie fealing that your leg is going to snap in 2 at ANY second is kinda strange, I know that well. lol

OK showoff, I wont be ready that soon! LOL

Jim, that is probably a key factor in why I was so cautious. It's tough to convince the mind that it's OK when you have been telling it not to DARE put any weight on the past 8 weeks!

Try 5 months!!! Dude, I felt SO naked and unsafe without my crutches....it was SO wierd taking those first steps and leaving the sticks behind me.

man, you've been out for a while there. when i broke my wrist, i was always trying to lift things heavier and heavier and push it. i wanted to go riding so bad. i was only in a cast for 3.5 weeks and was in a splint for 8 days before that. then it was all better. it's still a little sore even now, i just ha dpractice alst night. it stinks, because last year i sprained my thumb on the same hand(right) and it was so bad, i couldnt ride. so now when im done riding my wrist and my thumb hurts. sometimes it hurts while im riding too, just soreness. kinda hard to hang on when it does that.
