As the title says....I'm new to all this. Here's the deal, we picked up the Canon ZR65 while out on vacation (Got a great deal, couldn't pass it up) and now I'm looking at it thinking...now what??? I know I don't have a firewire port, so I'm guessing I need to buy a card and throw it in? Suggestions as to what to get? And then there's the whole software thing. I should mention, this will be strictly a hobby thing for me. So I don't need to go way overboard on it. If that makes sense to you guys. I know ya'll are a bunch of whizkids on this stuff though and I'd sure like to hear what you got to say. TIA, charlene

Go to best buy and pick up a card, i got mine for 20 or so bucks. You will need a cable also, they are about 20 bucks too. The adobe video editing software is pretty good as well.

Premiere rocks, but it can be difficult to get. All you need is the firewire card and a movie software, and you will be good to go.

hey char! i'm still happy with my zr, here's to hoping that you like yours! as the others have said you need to grab a firewire card and a firewire cable ... but just remember that you need a 4 pin-to-6 pin cable. as far as video editing software is concerned, windows movie maker 2 is pretty easy to use and it's free. if you want something with more advanced capabilities then adobe premiere would probably be the way to go. shoot me a pm when you get a chance. -Z

Yep...everyone has hit the nail on the head. Get a firewire card...they aren't too expensive. Some may be bundled with some "trial" versions of editing software. Windows movie maker will be enough to start with and do basic editing. Premiere is awesome for a more "prosumer" level product, but it is expensive. If you are anyone in your family is a college student you can purchase it at the "educational" discount, which is a HUGE savings.

Yep the Firewire is a must. As for editing software, I have heard very good things about the Adobe, but as some have said it is expensive. I would love to check it out someday for myself.....
