haha, i think might get in on this..

some shots you want that "dead" scenery. like those trees in the background of that first pic u posted, it kinda adds to the picture. it can add to the attraction of the picture in general. but other than that, more centered shots are nice. if there's nothing attractive to the eye around the rider, then there's no point in having all the extra crap.

I didnt mean to hijack the thread...yes, background scenery is good, as long as it doesnt detract from the subject. Thats why most photos have a shallow depth of field and blurry background. What I was trying to convey, was that in most cases your subject needs to take up a large portion of the frame...of course, if youre trying to show me jumping an 100ft double, then I want you to shoot the whole thing, no matter how small I am...but even then, the size of the double is more of the subject. Thats the beauty of photography. Everyone can express their own style, mood and feeling and tell a story the way they want to tell it. Lots of freedom of expression, until you try to submit to a magazine..then its a whole different story. By the way, by dead space I meant space where theres nothing-emptiness, not as in dead trees, etc...

I don't have anything to prove. You know what I'm talking about. I just wanted to make the point that not all shots should be tight to the subject.

But just for fun, here's one example of what I'm talking about.

Tight is good here

Not so tight is good here (the desire is to show some height)

not tight at all here. Height being the point I'm shooting here

You make me smile

Yes the 3rd one is tight, but not too tight. I shot it a little too tight, but who knew he would be throwing the #1 up then either.

BTW, these are all shots of my younger brother -- the infamous Woody_YZF
