Default 2004 RM-Z 250 good used bike?

Hey guys, quick question for you thumper fans. I have decided to rid my world of two-strokes by getting rid of my 04 CR 125. It has a Pro Circuit pipe, ASV levers, and has been well taken care of for the 14 months I've had it. I want to buy a thumper because I ride in the woods/on trails a lot, so I am tired of plug fouling, clutching, wrestling, etc. A guy who is interested in my bike has a used 04 RMZ-250 that he said is said up for woods, hand guards, etc. He is wanting to get $3000 for it if he sales it, but do you think this is a good investment for me to jump into the thumper world? Or should I wait until August to get an 05/06 model before the 07s come out? The RMZ was bought used and has been ridden by this guy for 7 months. He has 8 other bikes, ranging from 65s to 450s, so he is wanting to get rid of one I think. Let me know your thoughts.

This is a very broad question with unanswered variables. But I would personally wait and buy a new one late in the year. However, if the guy has that many bikes, SURELY he's taken care of the RMZ. Maybe it's in really good shape. I'd pull the air filter and the oil filter to look them over at the very least. 7 months is not long unless he has been lax on the maintenance. Then it's like 7 years. And don't take his word for it.

CR Rider,
I'll offer these thoughts to you on the RMZ 250. John owns one, and races it. The weak points we found are the cooling system is undersized. Our answer was a Boyesen impeller and impeller cover. Higher flow rate and allows oil changes without draining the coolant. The radiators are too small and the oil volume is also small so these bikes can run hot very quickly.

Suspension stance is odd, we changed out the stock springs for Race Tech springs for John's weight and riding level. This along with sag seting and working on the clickers did some good. Valve problems were largely found to be the springs. Some valve failures were reported. John did a Pro Circuit valve kit job last fall, replacing the stock valves with PC units and their springs and keepers.

If the bike has been maintaned and kept in good condition I'd offer around $2800.00 and let your bank account be your guide. Keep in mind that fourth gear is a weak link for this bike. And, if the valves haven't been maintained the top end is running on borrowed time. I think that overall the RMZ/KXF 250 are good bikes but a used one needs to be checked over carefully.

Bill

Thanks for the really good info. As far as the name goes, we'll see if the 'zook makes it to the garage first, but I guess that makes cr_rider outdated, huh?

If you are fouling plugs there is some thing wrong. I found that going one heat range hotter stopped all fouling or your jetting could be off.

Great info Bill, you covered everything. I was looking at used RMZ250s and decided that with all the fixes it would be best to look at a different color

A correctly jetted 2-stroke should not be fouling plugs.
