Default Fork rebuild?

Alright, I am semi-new to the whole motocross suspension thing, I am very mechanically inclined though. Here is a picture of what my forks looked like after removing my wheel. They are un-even, the lower one can pretty easily be pushed to the same level as the other one and after that they get compression and feel normal. What could be cuasing this? Can I rebuild the forks my self? And is there any place I can read to better understand the suspension on my bike. I want to be able to mess around with my suspension a little for different conditions. I set my sag and it is spot on.

I don't know much about suspension. I know so little that I pay to have mine done. (Except for fork seals) Oil level could be a reason the left one is lower than the right.

Hmmmm, Im not to sure whats going on. I watched a video from rocky Mt MC on the rebuild and I am sure that I can do it. Its just that I don't want to tear it down and rebuild it then upon putting it back together find that thats not the problem. From watching the video it looks like the assembly on the bottom stops the fork from extending, correct? Also I have a 93 cr250, does it have dual chamber forks? The video says if you have to screws on the fork cap you do. I do have 2 screws on it but my bike seems old to have something modern on it.

What year CR do you have?

Yes you can rebuild it. It's not tough, I have done mine plenty of times.

As far as why it's not extending all the way, I'm guessing that the inner chamber has some binding or has air in it so it's not returning to fully extended. Though, I doubt the binding would stop the spring from eventually returning it to fully extended, which leads me to believe you might have a broken spring in there.

You won't know until you tear it apart though.

Unless you have access to large sockets or a huge cresent wrench, you'll need one of these --> Fork Cap Wrench [M059-080236] - $17.91 : All Things Moto!, Online Store

Start to tear into it and we can help you with it as you go.

I have a ton of pictures that I've been meaning to post, but have never taken the time to do.

Its A 93. what is weird is that the right one(lower one) has almost no force behind it until it reaches the level of the other fork. Oh, well..... I am working on getting into my new 3 23'x23' garage right now and getting all the necessary dirt bike tools as well. It is ridable until I get settled in. You guys have been very helpful thanks so much!

If it's a 93, I am pretty sure they are not twin chamber, which makes them easier to work on.

Good luck with the garage! Garages are always nice!!!

Forks r so simple i have done alot myself theres a few ways this can happen...
1. That fork could be higher/lower in the clamp....
2. Someone could have broken the rod off/over tightned it/ and just put the top plug back on which would make the shock be shorter...(make the spring compress some)
3. It might have different oil/settings in each shock....
hope this helps!

its really pretty easy to do. i would just take it apart and see whats broken. it could just be a strange oil level, or maybe some air in there too.

i would recommend the pivot works kit, it contains all the seals + bushings that you need. its pretty sweet deal and it works quite well i think, so far anyway.

It looks like the dampener has either broken or come loose and your fork is stopping on the bushing.
