good question oldmx? kinda wondering that myself. i know my pipe needs cleaned real bad. even though its stock header. it still needs a cleaning. saw dust eats 'em up when their hot. that stuff burns right on. not to mention all the little rock marks.

The plating on the pipes is actually pretty hard. Try sanding it off and you will see.

I spray WD-40 all over my bike after washing and drying it, so it's always nice and shiny, no rust anywhere. I get free lubricants and stuff from work.
I must go through about 10 cans of different lubricants a month.
Lucky me ay

Try looking for a metal refinisher in your area, They can probably replate those pipes for less than 50 bucks. Clean them up your self to save some on prep time and let them take a look.

Just use a coarse scotch brite pad. NOt the green ones that are on the back of your dish sponge, but a brown or gray one. Also 80 grit sandpaper should strip that paint off in a flash. We use them in the body shop to remove paint from cracks and crevices that sandpaper just won't work on. You should be able to pick it up at home depot, if not the local auto parts store should have it in the Auto Paint section.

For final polishing I would go with some Nevr Dull polishing cloth. I use it on everything that is metal and plated, from chrome to aluminum, and it really makes it shine. It is pretty much a fine polish so it does not remove water spots and the like, but once you have all that cleaned up Nevr Dull will give you that "i can see my face" shine.
