That is a GREAT set of pics....certainly more comprehensive than I have ever seen as far as how many very close variations they covered in line from too rich to too lean.

But I have always been taught that you can't easily see the plug color where it most matters. That is, you have to either use a magnifying glass and a flashlight to see way down at the base of the ceramic, or chop the plug apart. That, I am told, is where your nice ring of mocha color should be, and it shouldn't be either too thin or too thick.

Several manufacturers sell flashlight-lit magnifying glasses just for the purpose of plug reading in this manner.

Any of you guys hear this or am I just stupidly anal about my jetting?

Wharfrat, you are 100% correct.
You jet by the ring at the top of the electride, not the color of the insulator. The color of the insulator depends on your heatrange plug, oil type, and oil ratio. You can have a white electrode and a 2mm thick brown or black ring at the base of the electrode, and your jetting is spot on. You want this ring to be about 2 mm thick. The only way you can see the ring, however, is with a special tool or by cutting the threads off the plug.
