I had to remove my clutch basket to remove some burrs. After trying a few different ideas to get it off (the last owner did not own a torque wrench I guess) I took my old spacer plates; since I was putting a new clutch in anyways; and screwed them together and put a handle on them. Worked great since I ended up having to use an impact to get them off. Nothing else I could come up with seemed to hold it good enough for me to feel comfortable with. Just a thought for those of you who don't have a proper clutch tool.

That's actually a tech tip out of one of the magazines, I think Dirt Rider. Basically just take some fibers and steels, drill some holes, bolt them together and you have a clutch holding tool. Very smart and easy.

if you have steel plates it is pretty easy to take them and weld, braze or solder a piece of 3/16" metal between them as they lay in the basket to align them.
