As many of you know, jr. left a bunch of oil out on the track our last ride at Nocona. He finally slowed down enough from the "teenage" thing and we took a hard look at the bike. rbm33 is helping us out with his many years of knowledge. The bike had good compression and plenty of oil in the engine side. It even started easily. Going through the gears brought a pretty nasty noise in 4th. We pulled the tank, subframe, and front sprocket and found this. ![]() ![]() You can see the ball bearings piled at the bottom and the shaft is well off center along with a nice chunk of the case chipped. (We do have the chipped piece.) Hopefully we can tig weld it back on. We'll split the cases tomorrow evening and see what the damage is. I'll have pics for anyone who has never split their cases.

My wallet hurts just looking at that. Might be time to look for a spare engine on Ebay that has a blown top end so you can have a parts donor. Something tells me you are gonna need serious parts.

with that countershaft bearing going the way of the chain i'd suspect the chain was too tight!!! Well the bottom end on these things are pretty simple i hope everythign looks good inside (besides bearings)

We didn't get as far as we wanted this evening. Patience and time both running short. We got the engine out and we will worry about splitting the cases tomorrow evening. jr and I are just fumbling our way through this deal. rbm33 has the knowledge but he has his own bikes to work on. Getting the engine out was hard enough. I dread putting it back in. ![]() ![]() ![]() BTW, c91x. No deal on the chain being too tight.

Jedi: When you get the motor apart, if you want to save the broken case. I know a guy that should be able to save it if that's the only broken part. This guy is so good that American Honda had him do warrenty welding work! Let me know & I'll talk to him, he's also a rider/racer.

We're gonna get the cases split and see exactly what we're dealing with before we make any decisions. I may take you up on that offer, Big M. But it may be something rbm can do for us. jr. has to work 'til dark tonight so we will start on it again tomorrow. And thanks for the info, Satch.

i called a buddy of mine that is a mechanic for team HRC, and he said it is definatly caused by a chain being too tight... he said follow the manual as close as you can for the chain slack...

If the chain was too tight it is because a rock or something got between it and the sprocket. Moving on........ |

rbm33 and I got about an hour and a half to spend on the engine this evening. jr. was working but I wanted to get as far as we could and see what we were facing. Got some pics. We removed the head, ignition cover, flywheel, cylinder, and kick starter. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We removed the clutch cover. The clutch assembly comes off after bending down the little tabs around the nut. ![]() ![]() The water pump was a little bit of a problem. The cover came off easily but the impeller proved to be pretty stubborn. It turns out this little rascal has a "left-handed" thread. ![]() More pics and the rest of the story to come later.

| maybe its because the chain was too tight.....just guessing myself. What I like to do is apply a chain stretcher and really give it a go! If my bike won't roll backwards in neutral I know I did it right. My gosh man your 45 years of age and a pretty sharp person learn the basic stuff b4 you ride. As for oil I use up to 3 qts per change. I fiqure if it they say 1.2 qts then 3 must be better. You also most likely don't know squat about tire pressure either. I run the full 32 pounds. I couldn't read it on my motorbike tires so I looked on my truck tires(Those numbers are way bigger to read). Insure you also lube up your grease fittings on the brake cylinder area(they are right in front)Let me know if I can help some more. Here's my #555-867-5309 ps Dude it looks like in the pic above RPM knocked over his gatorade on your motor. | i was stating the obvious ..... countershaft bearings don't just give out its from people keeping the chain too tight. |
