Jedi,
My wife's bike did the exact same thing. I just pulled the motor out of the bike tonight and I'm just waiting for the service manual to arrive. If I took a pic of the countershaft sprocket, it would look almost identical except it didn't damage the outside of the case like yours did. What exactly did you have to replace? I'm contemplating installing new crank bearings and the oil pump. I just put a new piston, rings and exhaust valves & seats in the bike so I know the top end is fresh. She did this at CycleRanch 3 months ago right before we got transferred to here to Hawaii, so I'm just now tearing into it.

To tell you the truth, I have to agree with the jab about slapping a Yamaha motor in this thing. This has been the worse motor I've ever had in a bike. From day one it burned oil, it lasted a year with my wife riding it before it needed valves and I did the piston rings to get it to stop burning oil. My wife loves this thing though so I guess I keep fixing the damn thing...

Keep the pics coming also, it's great info. I would also like an updated pic of your finger. That frickin' hurts, did you shart in your pants?

Welcome to ATM, Pat!
It looks like the only thing we're going to replace is the bearing and the bearing retainer. I think we can go to a local bearing shop and they can cross reference the NXS number so we won't have to wait on one from Honda. The engine has just been sitting since we tore it apart Saturday afternoon. rbm's daughter broke her leg racing that night and we haven't got back to it.
The top end has a Ron Hamp rebuild that is only a few hours old. We'll check everything while it's apart but it looks like the countershaft bearing is the only problem other than welding that piece back on the case. That should be done Wednesday. I'll post up some more pics.

We had a little more time to look things over thoroughly this morning. We're going to have to buy the left side case. The piece that was busted off obviously came off in two pieces. The smaller one is probably still out on the track at Nocona. Welding is no longer a viable option. We got the inner race of the bearing off by using a gear puller. There was nothing else to grab onto.

So the bearing, a set of gaskets, the outside seal, and left side case is what we're looking at. Since jr. works at the Honda shop, I'm sure they'll cut him a pretty good deal.

Jedi:

Before you buy the new case, send me the old one & I'll see if Randy can fix it, trust me if anyone can fix it Randy can. don't worry about the missing piece Randy can probably fabricate it.

Heck it don't hurt to try!

Bummer deal on the case. However, aside from the little detour this thread took....fingers and such... this has been awesome. Thanks for taking us through the process with you Jedi.
