Well, I'm about 1/2 done with the cam swap. I've got the old one out. The yamaha manual says that the camshaft to cap clearance should be measured with some Plastiguage. Is this still an important step since I will not be reinstalling the old cam ?

I think they are referring to the cam to "shim/Valve" cap?? If so then yes, this is a very important step.

You should use plasti-gauge to check the clearance of the cam and cam caps or journals. That is what they are referring too.

Newbe here in the middle of my 426 cam swap and just want to make sure it starts right up.

I did the swap and it started right up. Thanks for the helpful info.
