First off you'll need a dial indicator made for timing motorcycles.

Heres what I do on my Maico's, remove the pipe, this helps you see the dial indicator if your doing it by your self.

Install the dial indicator & find TDC, then back it off 1.8 BTDC

The line on the rotor & the stator should line up, if not loosen the 3 screws & move the stator so that they are lined up. most likely you will have to do this at the 490's are normally set at 2.0mm BTDC. setting them at 1.8 BTDC will help keep it from kicking back.

Make sure that you bring the piston to TDC when trying to kick start the 490, then bring the kick starter back up to the top & kick hard through the full stroke.

Never Kick at the kick starter as you will brake the quadrant gear in the motor.

I've seen some guy's try & start a Maico by pulling out the kick-starter & put their leg in front of the kick-starter & kicking at it!

You must used the compression release & get the motor to or just past TDC & kick hard all the way through the stroke.

Also make sure that you used the tickler to overflow the carb, because most of the Bing's don't have a choke!

BTW:

Where do you live? If close to Houston I can help you out in person or I may know someone close to you that can help.

Do you have a shop manual ?
