Default Re-Wiring a 1974 (I think) Kawasaki G5

Hello everyone. I have found some very useful info on this site but now I've run into some questions that need answered. I bought my first motorcycle about a month ago. I am trying to convert my g5 for street use so I can commute to school and work without having to pay for a car. But the previous owner had stripped it of all its dignity and wiring. The kickstand, body parts, lights, and switches have all been removed and all of the wiring has been cut at the base save the one running from the magneto to the ignition coil. I have the wiring diagram in the shop manual and new lights and ignition switch on the way and it seems to be easy enough to do. Although on the diagram it shows it needing a battery and my bike doesn't have one.

Will I have to get a battery to run the lighting system? Or can it all be powered off the magneto as well?

Thats my first question. Once I start the process I'm sure more will arise. Thanks in advance for the advice. Im so excited to get out on the road.
