Race report: Evo-Vintage fall series RD 3 palms River track.

Well yesterday day I raced the Evo – Vintage fall series round 3 at palms on the river track, I don’t really like the river track that much. But with the changes to the track & the great prep job they did. I got through it with out to much damage.

Got up early Sunday morning to load all my gear & stuff for the races, I normally do it Saturday night & then just load the bike in the morning, but I had to do a bunch of work on the rear shocks as they were not working at all the last race. One shock had the preload adjuster stuck on #1 & the other was on #2. they also didn’t have the proper amount of Nitrogen in them. One had 50 psi & the other had 100 psi when they both should have 175 psi, I also replace the bottom shock eye rubber bushing as they were worn out.

I got to the races & parked with the crew from the Holeshot & got ready for practice. the bike handled great with the shocks now working right.

Went to start the Maico for the 1 moto & it just wouldn't fire ? It started 2nd kick before practice. I kicked it a bunch of times & even tried to clear the gas out of the cylinder to get it to fire. So I tried to bump start it several times with no luck. Now there was just about 1 lap of the moto before mine left & I got the guys form the Holeshot to pull me with the Golf cart & it fired right away.

I race over to the line to get ready for my moto breathing & sweating like I just finished the race already. Now I just had enough time to put on my goggles & put the bike in gear before they let the Rubber band start go!

Well I got a bad start with the position I had on the start line & not being used to the rubber band start. I was dead last through the first turn. I rode as hard as I could & picked off everyone until I was in first place by lap 4. I tried to hold on to first, but I was just to tired from trying to get the Maico started. I got passed by Cycle Ryan & one other guy.

Between the 1st mot & the start of the second moto I change out the silencer to see if it would change the power band more to my liking. I also started the Maico to keep it warm so I would not have to push it to get it started, I also Noted that my front tire was low, so I filled it up ( don’t know if it was low during the first race?) put the last of my race gas in the bike & went to the line.

I picked a inside position this time next to one of the A riders. When the band snapped we all raced for the first turn down a short start straight. Well just before the turn someone fell & knocked the A rider over right in front of me & I had to slow down & turn inside of him, I still ran over his rear tire ( found out later that it was only his rear tire & not his feet) I had to squeeze by on the very inside almost off the track in first gear. By this time I was just about last.

I thought oh no not again! I grabbed a big handful of throttle & started banging gears, I managed to pass a few guy in the 2nd turn by coming tight & swinging wide to block pass them. I just kept working on passing people as fast as I could. I had to yell at one of the riders to get by him, but he let me by as he rides a different class in the same moto.

I like the power band change the silencer swap did it make it more to my liking & I used it to try to be a little smoother in this moto. I also remembered to drag the back brake in the some of the rough sections.

I must have been picking better lines this moto as I was in first place & pulling away by the 4th lap, I just keep trying to ride smooth & not make to many mistakes. Which I made a few, but not any really big enough to cause me to lose to much time. I thought that CycleRyan would put on a late moto charge & try & pass me back for first, but he didn't & I won the moto.

I’ll tell you what I was so worn out at the end of the moto I couldn't even get my helmet & Leatte brace off. I had to have my friend Frank help me take them off!

Well here are some photos of 3 Palms - Round 3

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Sorry i didn't get too many photos this time. We were parked far from the action and I didn't feel like walking back and forth a million times. I think at the next Splendora race I'm having some family come watch, so they can snap some photos of our vintage race for us.

Also I ordered a helmet camera, that I had hoped to get before 3 palms, but its coming tomorrow instead) so I should have full video of the next race from my bike (maybe I'll be fast enough to have to turn it around to get a view of you guys, haha j/k)

Finally, it was a fun race. My first experience with sandy track conditions. I think when I can invest in some stiffer fork springs and better rear shocks I can move a little quicker over those big jumps. In the second moto, if I got a little too excited in jumping--I'd land, then have to land 3 more times as I bounced down the track like an old cadillac.

Check out BigMaico making the trophy girl smile

Yeah that picture was a raincloud accident, but it came out good in the end...

I didn't see you out at 3 Palms on Sunday? Are you going to be coming out to Splendora in a few weeks? I'd like to get some good SLR pictures of me clearing some table tops for my office, haha.

I didn't make it out there, we rode on Saturday and opted not to race. I can't make the Splendora round, I'll be out of town.

You going up to Jefferson?
