A week or two ago I needed to ship a tire to a fellow ATM'er who had bought it from me. How many of you have ever bought a tire from an online store? It always comes wrapped in shrink-wrap, right? So, that's what I did with this tire, rather than try to build a box to ship it in. I set up the shipping online via UPS with an at-home pickup. The driver came and picked it up and just smiled and went on her way. Today, I get a letter in the mail from UPS saying that because my package wasn't in a box, that I was being charged an additional $8 handling fee, but not to worry about it because they had already charged it to my credit card!

$8 bucks is a little stupid. But reading the fine print on an airway bill or whatever you fill out...or your agreement online if you make an account there....I believe every company states something about extra handling charges for things like that I'd complain to em anyway...it's just a friggin tire....not like it's a frame.

I would say something. Ever tire I have ever bought online came in shirk wrap including the the sand tires I bought last week. I never sold any so I can't say I know it from the seller side. I know it is $8 but call and see if they can justify their actions by asking them how to ship something like that in the first place. I have an account with UPS and I can't find where it states all items must be boxed. I have had them try to tack on extra before I dispute it and they usally remove the extra charge. Once the said they couldn't read the city so it was $12 extra to cross reference it via Zip code. Love to know how they say tires should be shipped.

It doesn't, but if it's not in a box then it's an 'irregular', hence the $8 additional charge.

Hmmm....I almost hate to say anything, but I sold my stock front tire on Ebay and shipped it out with nothing other then a pc of cardboard taped on the tire to hold my shipping label......got there fine via UPS and I had no other fees involved. This was a year ago, but it worked with nothing other then what I had mentioned.

You know what....I believe I shipped my tire as 'irregular' now that I think about it. That would explain why I had no extra charge.....

Call your CC company and dispute the charges.

When I did all the purchasing for the Honda dealer, all the tires were shipped to us w/ the pc of cardboard and a shipping label. I'm not sure how the distributors were billed for this but I can't imagine they payed extra to ship them that way or they would have boxed them. The ATV tires came boxed but motorcycle tires all came that way...

I am sure if you purchased a box to fit it then you would have spent the $8 on that. Shipping stinks sometimes!

It's $8.00, fuggitaboutit.

That is exactly what I was thinking too. Even if you have a box to fit a tire you still have to figure in your time and other expenses involved. I think I'd just pay the irregular charge.

I beg to differ. My dad gave toll 10 and expected $9 change. The person in the toll booth only gave him a dollar back. He complained and got his $9 back. Now he doesnt really care about the money. It was the principal that mattered to him

Your situation is different than this one. Your dad was right there in front of him, knowing the toll charge. Not the same situation at all.

Oh well I was just saying that if you fight for your money you can get it back. but yeah different situation. whatever

Yeah, that doesn't really make much since, considering how its a tire, made of rubber. so its kind of hard to ruin it.

Yea, forget about it man. It's only 8 dollars. Big deal. Infact next time UPS comes to your door, give him/her another 8 bucks just cuz it's no biggie, still not happy? Ok, next time you go to the gas station, tell the man you only want 2 dollars....hand him a 10 and tell him to keep the change!!. LMAO. Hell yes get your 8 back brutha. Most of don't have the coin others do.

I am sure they are covered in their tariff somewhere. (I am pretty familiar with freight tariffs.) They are all available to the public. Since they can't put the whole thing on the weighbill they just reference it. Dispute it all you want but I bet it ends up being paid. Freak may be right though in his case, as he isn't thinking about it as 8 dollars as much as he is thinking about it being a valve job for all 4 valves on his Honda in 3 or 4 years.

They don't want to ship a bus bumper out...but they will....it's huge...and they incure a surcharge to your shipping cost for it. What I'm trying to say is UPS didn't charge $8 cuz he didn't put it in a box...they don't care....they are charging because it's an odd shaped item...one that is too long....or one that meets certain girth criteria. It's in the fine print. You can next time...get a box and throw it in there but you're gonna pay an extra $8 for the box + the new bigger dimensions and weight on that anywho...so box it or not |
