The $8 is an additional handling charge for an 'irregular' item, if it was in a box he wouldn't have been charged the extra $8, but he'd still be out the cost of the box, tape, etc.

UPS: Avoid Shipping Charge Corrections

Additional Handling

Additional Handling applies to the following:

Any article that is encased in an outside shipping container made of metal or wood
Any item, such as a barrel, drum, pail, or tire, that is not fully encased in a corrugated cardboard shipping container
Any package with the longest side exceeding 60 inches or its second-longest side exceeding 30 inches
Any package with an actual weight greater than 70 pounds

All of what Faded wrote is true. I used to work for UPS loading trucks and "Irregs" as we called them are anything that cannot be loaded into a "wall" of boxes. Obviously a tire does not have the rigid strength to support a wall of boxes. This is why there is an extra charge. They have to be loaded at the very end of a truck or be placed as a filler in a wall.

Well I have thrown mine out there a few times but I do the same. When I first started checking out forums, such as this one, I was kinda thrown off by some responses. Then to find a little info on the age, backround and such made it a little clearer. I was on KTM talk for the 50's (full of good info) mostly much older (with Kids) and all do their own wrenching, not as much mine is bigger than yours thing.

Don't want to Hijack the thread any longer

I guess what makes me more mad than anything is the fact that the same tire I spent $8 to have shipped to me cost me $21 to ship out after selling it. Eight bucks isn't going to break me or anything, but I'd much rather have my 8 bucks back and be out a little time. We just moved, so cardboard is not in short supply around here! I could have easily made a box had the driver just said something (or had I taken the time to read the fine print on the website). It pisses me off, but the hassle of dealing with it is probably not worth the $8 in the long run. Oh well.
Freak, I'd take you up on that offer, but after this whole thing I can't afford to buy a paddle tire now You ride trails at all? I've heard a lot of good things about East Fort Rock- how far is that from you?
