Default Who Was Your Pre-McGrath MX Hero?

I guess this post is aimed at those who were old enough to remember some of the early MX riders--let's say, pre-McGrath.

Who was your favorite motocross hero back in the day, and why?

Mine was (drum roll) . . . . . . . . Bob "Hurricane" Hannah.

Why? I liked everything about him. The in-control-out-of-control riding style and attitude; the lightning bolts on his (then) yellow Yamaha and helmet. His infamous blitzkreig way of coming from the very back of the pack to the front. I witnessed him ride twice--once in '79 (pre-broken leg) and then in '81 when he dueled with Kent Howerton.

Those were cool days, and believe me no one was crying about getting knocked down in the sport (anybody remember Hannah and Howerton in the infamous Hangtown moto?).

Yep, I say it unashamedly--Bob Hannah was my hero!

Note for Keetoman: Bernie Shreiber soon took over Hannah's spot.

I have to agree. Bob Hannah was my very first motocross hero. Even though I was only 9 years old in 1979, I grabbed every magazine I saw with him anywhere inside it. I lost contact with the sport after Hannah, until 1996 when Jeremy became my new favorite rider. I keep hoping he will ride an SX, so I can see him ride one more time. I so wasn't ready for his retirement, I didn't even care if he never won another race, I just loved watching him race. Sniffle, sniffle.

Oh yea, I almost forgot . . .

For you Hurricane fans out there, I have some vintage shots of him riding up in Unadilla NY, taken by yours truly (well, my friend took some). Anyway, they are in a photo album at work, but I will scan them in and post them next week so you can upload them. Good collectors items!

Roger DeCoster - Used to watch him on Wide World of Sports.
My new favorite is Stefan Everts for heading down to Brazil and winning the ISDE

Well I'm old enough to know most of the guy's that were your hero's.

I never really had a hero, But I know most of the guy's you've talked about here.

I grew up in So. Calif & raced from 1974-1982, I raced Saddleback & Carlsbad, also some of the night races at Ascot , Lyons & Irwindale.

I went to school with MIke Bell & knew Kenny Zart, John Desoto, Danny La port, Gaylon Mosier & Bob Hannah & a bunch of others.

I even worked for Bel-Ray for a while & got to know Tom White, Gary Jones & Kenny Roberts.

R.J. ... Too Hip, Gotta Go !
Before that, Danyy Magoo Chandler. He was just nuts on a bike, I loved his crazy Flat out style...
And of course Bob Hannah.... he was just so good. I did have chance to see Hannah race at Broome Tioga, in one of his last seasons... like maybe 82 or something... i can't remember when he stopped racing. I think he was on a suzuki then ????

When I was young we had all the supercrosses here on Eurosport. Ricky Johnson was my favorite. I really liked his 'BadBoy' attidude. I had those stickers all over my BMX. Also Eric Geboers was my hero. I loved watching the dutch beachraces on tv. Too bad they're gone. That sure was fun watching. More then 500 racers on the start and the big guys where lapping almost all of them in the big heavy sand whoops, the long straights, boy do I miss these times!!!

This is an easy one.

The Beast From The East Damon Bradshaw.

I loved watching that guy ride, yeah he had a bad attitude, but that was part of the reason I liked him.

Close behind Bad-Shaw would be Rick Johnson.

This is my 1st post here, killer subject! Danny "Magoo" Chandler, this guy was fearless and so fast! My Dad and me were regulars at the Daytona Supercross from '79 through the late '80s. I remember when he went to Maico, holy cow that guy was flying!!!! No doubt he was the fastest in the open class, just those bikes were not dependable enough for him as they broke a lot.

Rick Johnson then Damon Bradshaw. Bradshaw came out and shut down all seasoned pros. Bradshaw lives in Idaho so we get to see him at some of the tracks. Always willing to sign autographs. A good Guy. Berm!!

Skymaster:

I got to see Marty & meet his son Tyler @ the Houston Supercross.

I intraduced Mike Berg to Marty & Tyler, As Marty & few other signed a T-shirt that we raffled off at the GMB III

When I raced in the old days I got to see Marty every weekend until he became a national pro.

I used to love watching him & Bruce Mc Dougle go at it on tracks at Saddleback & carlsbad.
