Default who knows about guns?

I just acquired a ruger .22 "new model" . I know very little about guns, i've shot my buddies but never really got into whats a good gun and what is there to look for in a gun. My chick and i have been talking about getting one and it just so happened my gramps has several and gave me a "beginner" gun with which i could either use or trade it in for a better one. I'm pretty much looking for something that we can have fun with and something that could be used for protection if necessary when out in the boonies.

~~~ I understand guns can be a very touchy subject with people and i am ok with that. I intend to use all my current safety knowledge / common sense when this is with me as well as i plan on enrolling in a gun safety course. I do not plan on taking this out if children are with us and nobody will be allowed to touch / see it. ~~~
A 22 is a great first gun. Benefits are low recoil, cheap ammo and little noise. I would keep it and get good w/ it before you get anything bigger. Except for large game or very small game, a 22 can get 'er done.
from what i ahve read you are dead on. I kinda think i would rather have a gun with a clip over a revolver. What would i gain / lose by trading this in towards one with a clip? Can i just go to a gun shop and say hey i wanna trade this in for....?
Ruger makes great guns. I've got this little pistol:
It's a .22 and has a 10 round clip and is great for plinking. You can get extra clips too, so you can just swap out the clips...can go through a box of shells in a hurry with enough clips. It's just a lot of fun to shoot. Like NYMXer said, they're cheap to shoot and any gun can be deadly if needed.
Generally revolvers are very reliable. There is not much that can go wrong with them. Semi automatics are not necessarily so reliable. Although a good one will be just as reliable. A little bit more work to service but nothing major. I bought one sort of cheap semi auto at my friends urging. I ended up selling it because it jammed on me a bunch of times. I since bought a more top shelf Berretta and it has never jammed.
Definatly need either a 9mm or 40 s&w. A .22 is great but not for proper protection. Ammunition prices are one deciding factor in buying a pistol, cheaper the ammo the more you can shoot. Recoil on these two guns is not over powering. If you do get a semi auto pistol make sure your girl can load and cock the gun some have heavy springs in the slide and are tough to do. Id recommend going to a gun range that allows you to rent the gun for a hour or so and rent a few to see which you both like. Expect a price range from 350-600 depending on what you buy. Definatly a good purchase for the both of you. Enjoy.
i did more seacrhing and it looks liek i've been shooting 9mms. I never paid attention it was just, hey you wanna try? I like the feel of the ones i shot, i did get a chance to shoot a .45 and won't do that again for a while. I was not comfortable with that. I think i will either rent one like was mentioned or take the one i have to a gun shop and see what it's worth. If i can do a decent trade with some cash then i'll go that route. If not then maybe i'll just have them go through it and make sure it's assembled properly and ready for firing....
If you're just looking to do some cheap plinking, and simple home protection the .22 is just fine. It's all about preference. Spend some time at the range and try a few different options.
I have a Sig Pro 2340 as a carry piece. An 2 big dogs for the house.
