Default when was the last time ...?

when was the last time routine maintenance was performed on your shock/forks? it's probably been too long!

it has been for me, anyway. i'm guilty ... i admit it.

when i emptied the oil out of the fork tubes i felt pretty bad. that stuff was way overdue for a change. it was dark, soupy (looked 'broken down'), and just smelled bad. my poor bike.

so now as i go through the process of tearing down the forks and cleaning everything up, i've resolved to make this a bi-annual routine. that should suffice for the amount of riding time that i get.

so this is a reminder to those who have thought about doing it or having it done. now's the time! don't think you have to wait until your fork seals start leaking. and that graphics kit or bolt on performance add-on can wait, after all it doesn't do you much good to try and get your bike to go faster unless the suspension is primed to handle the beating you're asking it to take.

I've never done it. It's on my to-do list for this winter. To be honest though, it's kind of intimidating.

I rebuilt my shock a few months back, then I put new fork seals and oil in the forks. Well my forks are already leaking again...stupid mud.

i don't have any info on the shocks that your bike has, but basically what it involves is taking your forks off, draining the oil, cleaning all of the old oil out of the forks (this is the most time consuming part, but it doesn't do you much good to put new oil in if there's old oil still in there that it's going to mix with), then reassembling the forks, filling them to spec/rider preference with fresh fluid, putting the springs back in, and then mounting them back up. it sounds a lot worse than it actually is.

It's funny (and a coincidence) you brought this topic up. This last weekend I changed the fork oil in my mighty YZ250. This coming weekend I'm changing fork oil in Russ's and my YZ250F's.

I've never serviced a shock before and besides, I don't have any nitrogen to refill the bladders. So...I always send them to my bud at the suspension shop and he does them for me.

Depending on how many hours I get on the bike(s), I'll service the forks every 4-6 months and the shock every 6-9 months.
