Default What type of riding is harder on bikes?

I ride motocross and x-country / hare scrambles. And it always amuses me that the mx guys say that off-road is much harder on your bike than mx. But the offroad guys claim that mx is to hard on the bikes.

What I've found is offroad will scratch your plastic and the mud and grit will act like sandpaper on the frame, but the engine is rarely screaming especially in a technical course. But in mx the engine is often pinned and the suspension gets hammered.

In conclusion I think both can be hard on the bike, no matter how much abuse it takes I think if you maintain them properly todays bikes can take whatever we dish out ...... I bought mine to ride it and thats what i'm going to do.

What's your thoughts?

I'd say both. I think MX riding punishes the suspension and stresses the frame more. The x-country works the engine over. I've seen some pretty beat up MX bikes from crashes. At the same time, some of those x-country bikes look like they have been to the moon and back. It's a toss up. The riders in both disciplines ride those bikes to the extremes.

I do hare scrambles and sometimes my pipe gets a beating. But now im wise and have invested in a pipe guard.lol Also id rather replace plastics than replce top ends or having suspension problems. BUT...in the long run I think that MX is harder on your engine/bike and your wallet.

I agree, just by new plastic when its time to sell the bike then it looks like new.

well look at it this way, hare scramble you ride for 1-3 hours depending on class. moto you run for 20 min.

I think MX is pretty hard on them. I think the Sand Dunes are also really hard on them. Now that I have said that, it pretty much seems that using them is hard on them. That's what they're made for, right??

good point, i cant think of much riding that is actually easyer on ur bike. i wont ride in sand at all. it eats at everything, other than that its all good.
