Default What Rear Tire To Run

As some of you know I will be desert racing in '04. I know very little to nothing about bike tires. What I do know is after talking to a few of the racers they say they go thru atleast 2 sets of tires per season due to the rocks they get chewed up quick. So what brand and model of tire do you that know tires recommend? I obviously need something that does good in the sand but will perform in the hard pack and rocky stuff too.

looky here Tires

I had a 739 Dunlop and I went to the Dunlop 756 rear tire, It works excellent in the desert in both Hard and soft surfaces
Here is something i got on the tire from a description:

"Offers outstanding intermediate-to-soft-terrain performance, yet its versatile design gives it a wide range of ability on harder surfaces. * Shoulder knobs feature recessed biting edges for enhanced traction in ruts and flat corners. * Rear tread pattern provides maximum straight-line grip for excellent starts and improved braking. * Reduced tire weight produces less unsprung weight."

I train for endurance purposes with my BF in the desert for MX races i noticed a great difference from my old tire to the new one

I am currently running Maxxis C6001 front and rear. A guy i know from another forum swears by these tires, he rides alot in Nevada in the desert. They are a directional tire, and he told me to mount the front tire backwards. The first ride I had on these tires was the 24hrs at starvation ridge (the one Ranger has posted the helmet cam footage of) It was ver loose loamy soil and they hooked up really well. My old Bridgestones s***ed in this soil. I went out last weekend in the mud and rocks and the tire performed well. They were $80 shipped to my door from www.rockymountainmc.com

DBD,

I have been ichin to try the MH2's "Michilin" they look like one hell of a tire. I have used the stock 739 and M-12, S-12 rear michilin. Tthe M-12 front is great. M-12 rear I thought didn't do well at all on hard pack that was wet on top. The S-12 I now have is a great tire so far Has hooked up on the 24hr dry loose baby powder and some of the wet nasty stuff. Seems to be wearing well too. I would have gotten the MH2, but they were sold out so S-12 it was.

I think some heavy duty tubes and MH2's would be the ticket.

DBD,
I use the Maxxis IT tires for everything. They have good wear and durability. I have ridden in everything from sand to rocks and they always come through with flying colors.

The IT will give you better hookup in the softer dirt and sand than a hard terrain tire will.

The tire I have on my rim now has 6 MX practices, 4 MX races, 1 GP at Glen Helen, and numerous rides around the hills by the house and it is in great shape.

Mine works fine for this area, not sure how it will be in his situation, I've never rode in the desert. But would really love to.
