What to look for, check, and inspect in a used bike.

As most of you are aware I am new to the game, and I am looking at buying a new bike.. I thought a thread where we give recommendations on what to look at when looking for a used bike could be benefitial for other people (as well as myself)

Here are some that I got from people already, please add yours!

The better a bike looks, generally the better it was maintained. don't let brand new plastics sell you though. ask to see the old ones. they are a good indicator of the maintenance the previous owner performed.

Look in the air box. how clean is the air filter, and the box itself. these are tell tale signs of how well a bike has been maintained.

Another good tell tale sign of a bikes wear is to look at the footpegs. Do they still fit tight or do they rattle and flop around? My dealer taught me that little trick about 2 years ago.

Check the tightness of both the front nd rear wheel for bad wheel bearings. Hold the bike and try to wiggle the wheel and ire side to side to see if there is any looseness or play.

Check and shake the swing arm to see if the swing arm bearings are good or bad.

See if it smokes really bad. White smoke indicates the crankseals are bad or gone and its sucking tranny oil into the engine. Blue smoke indictes rich jetting.

Check to see if rims are straight and not bent.

Great idea for a thread,
When i bought my VOR SM500, i knew they were high maintenance bikes. So as i was checking the bike i was asking questions about the maintenance on it, asking about different parts. The owner was able to tell me how to maintain every part and how often and with what. It left me feeling secure that the bike had been well looked after.

Here is another good tip:

3rd gear is the most commonly abused gear out there on MX bikes. Therfore it is the first one to start popping out of gear etc. Here is a test.

When riding the bike, place it in 3rd gear in the meat of the powerband, then jamb on the rear brake as hard as you can and give WFO throttle. Should do nothing but bog.

Got that one from MXA about 6 years ago.

dont worry about rubbed off paint on the frame that happens after 3 good rides,
check the rubber chain guard on the swingarm,
check the swingarm for any play to see if those bearings are bad,
make sure when you show up to ride the bike that motor is not warm bc they may have rode it before you got there bc it is super hard to start cold,
ASK FOR RECIEPTS & IF ANY MOTOR WORK HAS BEEN DONE--ASK WHO PERFORMED IT

Nah, this was 6 years ago yardpro, it would probably only work on a Honda.

Seems like sound advise, but I'm with yardpro... probably only works on a yami.

Nope around 6 or 7 years ago is when the "transformation" happened.
