Default A very limited first ride report of the 06

In one word...impressive. I didn't spend alot of time on the bike, mostly just runs back and forth and a few corners at some speed. The bike feels like a feather compared to my 03, I mean there is NO comparison in how light it feels. I now understand "centralization of mass". Yamaha did thier homework.

I did jump one of the new jumps on the track, but I wasn't in full gear so I stopped with that one. Again the light feel is incredible, the one I did was probably about 50' not huge but enough to tell the bike is flickable.

The handling is MUCH sharper then my 03 was, I was pushing hard in one corner and it never faultered, in fact the bike inspires alot of confidence, which is good cause my confidence is out the window right now with my left arm being so weak and not having riden in so long.

Tomorrow I think Jer will be out, so I will be riding some more and can get the suspension broke in some.

More to come.

Congrats Jim! I suggest breaking the suspension in very well in before having it worked on. Play with the clickers and the spring adjustment before hand you will be surprised how close you will come. Then I believe you will find you will do less work to make it right. What I mean by that is you may not respring it as you mentioned in a previous post. It may turnout that valving alone will be the ticket. They are amazing bikes that is for sure!

Welcome back Jim I hope to take a lap with you at GMB just be willing to go slower than you would normally.

I plan on messing with some settings tonight. I didn't even check to see where things were set last night, just jumped on.

I know the one jump I was doing, the back end was kicking me bad, as soon as I left the face I felt it and did the old bounce of the rev limiter rev.

I just don't think I will be able to get the sag where I need it for my fat butt right now, but I will definitly play with settings before spending any money.

Oh one other thing on these new 450's the chain adj blocks are off by one mark from one side to the other. You will get 4 on the left and 5 on the right to be straight. I didn't believe it until I put my o-ring chain on and used a tape measure to center the tracking. Sure enough it was one mark off when exactly center. Measure yours right now and check it.

Simple dc.

Measure back from the center of your swingarm bolt (Where it goes thru the frame) back to the center of your axle bolt, on both sides, they should be the same.

In this instance I didn't do it that way. I put it on a stand and turned the tire to where the widest part was at the top of the swing arm. I then measured from the knob to the inside of the swing arm. It isn't as precise as Motoman's way but it is closer than doing nothing at all. Remember this method isn't as good as measuring from the swing arm especially if the rim isn't true.

I look at it like this when you see car racers checking the toe in or out at the track with a string and tape. It's better than eye balling it.
