Default Universal installation

Got the Universal Triple Clamp installed. Took the front end all the way down to the bearings in the steering head since I had it that far aprat anyway. Installed the universal mount front justified and also added a 1 1/8" Pro Taper handle bar. The way i figure it the new triple clamp, rubber mounted bar clamps and pro taper bars I should not be as arm weary. I especially wanted to avoid the tingleing hand syndrome. That one is especially scary. I hate it when my hands got that way cause I couldnt tell if I was holding on well enough.

Here's what I saw as I took it apart.

Picture of the old bearings. Notice the lightweight grease that Yamaha uses. :

Finally, here it is all back together:

One good trick i discovered. The wratchet end of a 3/8in spark plug socket has a hex head shape that fits perfectly into the axle which makes taking the nut off the other end a snap.

Well, first ride report tomorrow. I'll let all know weather or not the investment solved the problem. Total cost

Universal Triple Clamp $159
Pro Taper Bar $89
Grease Had it already.
Experience Hopefully Priceless

hey Dirtnap, if you just take the nut off the front axle before you loosen the pinch bolts on the forks you won't have to mess around with sparkplug sockets and vicegrips.

I have mine apart right now as well to change the fork oil.

Why the heck dosent yamaha use a decent grease on the bearings?

Some things we will never know....

Nice bars and triple clamps!! My mechanic always grease every bearing again when he sells a new bike. He knows that they do not use much of it in the factory!!

the way they assemble bikes from the factory makes me laugh. but it also has to do with shipping and other various things as well. my friend bought a breand new 04 YZ250 and it had water mixed with gas in the tank. apparentley no one paid any attention that the gas cover was off and they decided to pressure wash the bike. they were nice enough to rebuild the carb and motor for him though.

Ok, took it out to Village creek today. Here's the results.

Easier to pull on the bars when in the air. Bars ride higher in the clamps on this mount.

Definately easier on the hands. NO TINGLING at all !!!. By the end of the day my arms were not pumped and I could hold on as if the day were fresh.

Synopsys : Definately a good move. Between the Universal rubber mount triple clamp and the Pro Tapers I never felt like I was losing my grip or that I had arm pump. I win !!1
