YOU are not supposed to be useing the rear brake i repeat DONT use it, you are suppose to be using the front brake and have 2 fingers on the clutch at all times, so it should be easy o tur either way.

Well it depends! Yes you should always use you front brake but you are also supposed to use the rear brake with it, if you dont you cant stop as fast without making the front end lock up and slide out. When you are turning you shouldnt be using any brakes at all because all braking should be done before entering the turn.

There are many different riding styles...I think finding your own from practice then encorperating tips you get is the best style.

the pros say that you dont even need a front brake...and for me i use the front brake 95% of the time, the other 5% is back and front at the same time. (if i want to stop fast Off-road)

I also find turning left easier. It's manily because the throttle is on the right....gives me better control. It's just my personal opinion. When riding you want to concentrate the majority of your braking power to your front wheel. However, it is fun to come ripping into a corner and use the back brake to pitch the bike out. Plus, who doesn't love a little skidding action?

So you guys that use the front brake are you telling me you don't use the nacl brake at all during the corner??, I go into the corner real hard 3/4 of the way throughI tapp the back brakes and then I drop the clutch Last edited by tons_of_fun; 07-29-2004 at 11:12 AM.

I mainly use the front brake as well. Just seems easier to get at while cornering. 'Course...I am DANG slow at cornering. I will try the breaking before cornering suggestion...sounds like a solid technique. I also try to look at the end of the turner, rather than staring at the ruts in front of me. Oh, and weight the outside peg. Those two things seemed to get me from SUPER-MEGA slow to just MEGA slow cornering

Wow, lots of bad info in this one... Sorry, but the front brake is pivital if you are ever going to be fast, AS is use of the BACK.. Correct braking technique is to use both front and back at the same time. The key is to finish your braking BEFORE you turn (read before the apex of the corner), then be on the gas, as you are turning. As Keeto mentioned, different situations call for different use, but as a general rule, you will use both most of the time and a combination of either the rest. 70% of braking power comes from your front brake, so use it (their are situations that call for not using it, but as a general rule, the front brake is your friend). If someone told you "I know how you can get 30% better braking power." Would you want to know how? Me too. The answer is using the back brake in conjunction with the front. Learn to use it, without locking it up. You should get comfortable using the back brake regardless of turn direction. I would suggest practicing the circle drill (in both directions) and the figure 8 drill. Both will help you with turns. For me, I've never had a problem in either direction. I'm slow both ways.

Set up a slalom (sp?) course in an open field, and the further to the end you get, the closer the obstacles become. That should really help since you'll hit your obstacle if you mess up, which you dont wanna do. Maybe i should try that..... |
