Exclamation tranny oil!

hey guys, i changed the oil in my tranny today and i just started thinking...did i put too much oil in the tranny. i put all the contents from the quart of bel ray gear saver. is there a such thing as putting too much oil in the tranny? i am going ride tomorrow and i don't want to run the bike if there is "too much oil" if there is a such thing...maybe i am just being silly.

Yes...you can indeed overfill the tranny. I don't know if you have a check bolt or a sight glass(I have check bolt on my CR)but if you have sight glass fill it to the top of the sight glass and if you have check bolt fill it until oil dribbles out...then ride the bike around for a few..come back and re-check again.

I don't know why it would hurt, but (their's always a big butt ) the way the oil flows around in the tranny is by "flinging" the oil around. If you have too much it may impede that "flinging" process.

If you have a check bolt, remove it and let it drain until it stops.

You MAY not hurt anything, but better safe then sorry.

Sorry I couldn't give you a better more definative answer.

It should say on your transmission case how much to put in. Did you guys ever read a manual that said not to over fill an engine or transmission? It is there and there for a purpose.

If you leave it grossly overfilled it will eventually work itself down to a more proper level, but going out your seals. with any luck some will push it's way past your crank seal.

Does anybody realize that an overfilled transmission can lead to overheated oil?

But what could any of that hurt?

I dont honestly know what a 2003 yz250 calls for. But if it was mine that is what it would have in it.

You definately have way too much oil in there. Like ossagp said, on your tranny cover it has a #cc, that is how much oil capacity your tranny requires. If your just gonna blindly do work to your bike, youd be better off not doing anything at all! READ THE MANUAL! Manufactures have invested more time and money than you will ever want to know into the workings of your motor. Dont be a hack mechanic on something that could potentially hurt you. At least have the respect for your machinery that it deserves or dont touch it.

I agree, too much oil wont be good for your engine!! Just drain the oil again and put in the right amount. It should be somewhere on the engine covers but it will be close to 750cc.
