Question Tranny Issues!

hey im new here , just wondering if i can get some helpful input on a problem im having. i have a 2000 yz125 that started hitting a false nuetral. some people said clutch some said tranny some said bent shift forks, worn dogs on gears??? i need to figure out what it is so i dont spend $$ to have the tranny tor into if i dont need it. also i found that that my clutch cable was only holding on by a couple of threads, could this have worn the forks or gears?
when i shift from 2nd -3rd or 3rd-to 4th and so on, every once in a while when i shift gears and release the clutch it would act like its in nuetral.
thanks for any help

Everything you listed could be the problem. I tend to lean more towards a worn or bent fork. No getting around tearing into it.

I had two 99s that I could never get to shift correctly and both were purchased new. I split the cases on one when the bike was two months old looking for a way to improve the smoothness of the shifting and to eliminate the false neutral problem. The trannies in those years sucked and I never trusted the shifting.

It's likely that you have a few bent forks and/or a worn shift spool. Look at the second gear sliding gear closely when you have it apart. Also - try running different oils after it's repaired - I found Silkolene worked well for the shifting and the clutch.

The clutch cable being frayed has nothing to do with the tranny problem. For what it's worth - I never use the clutch to shift. I never have and I have been racing a long time. I don't back off the gas, either. Full throttle and pull up, no clutch. The trannies are fully cogged and are capable of handling it.
