Default Thought & Prayers Request

Sunday at the 4 Aces National H&H a friend Amy Hasten pile drived into the ground as it was described. She is in surgery at this moment to make repairs to her back. I would ask you to send a thought or prayer her way for a sucessful surgery and recovery.

Amy holds the #1 womens plate in the Desert, Enduro and Best of The West Series as well as the #2 plate in the National Hare & Hound Series the #3 plate in GP. She has held the #1 plate in the National Hare & Hound series in the past but was beat by 3 points last year due to an injury and recovery time missing 3 races last year. Amy held the #1 plate for all series in 2007.

Here is the last post her sister made on the D-37 site;

Hi Everyone. I just got back from spending time w/ Amy. She has finally been moved to a room. They will be moving her once again to another room tonight because we don't like the people that she is roomed w/ right now or how the room is set up. It's a room w/ 3 beds in it & she is the middle bed. There is very little room & any time someone walks by they bump the bed, which puts Amy in a lot of pain. You can't bump the bed or put anything on the bed. She is in a tremenduous amount of pain. When they moved her from the ER to her room, they were not the gentliest (spelling???). One attendant, from what Amy said, even tried to sit the bed up. Lets just say that Amy had enough strength in her to chew his butt out!

She wanted to say thank you to the Vikings for the flowers & bear w/ the balloon. It brought a smile to her face. I also wrote down the jest of everyone's replies to the 2 other threads that I have started & read them to her. She greatly appreciates everyone's support, thoughts & prayers. This has been a very scary, life-changing event for Amy and she needs all the support, thoughts & prayers at this time.

Now on to the more serious news. The doctors reviewed her catscans & X-rays for majority of the morning and have concluded that she needs to have back surgery. T10 is broke but stable. It will heal & they are not worried about it slipping or sliding. They are most concerned w/ T6. That vertebra has completely shattered. It is unstable... if she gets up to walk, the chances are very high that it would shift & then damage her spinal cord.

They will be sticking rods & pins w/ a plate in her back so that it can fuse back together. They are saying that shortly after the surgery, pending her pain, she will be able to get up & walk. It is also pending when she gets the chest tube out. They are hoping that it gets removed tomorrow so then they can put her in the back brace and get her up sometime later tomorrow afternoon. She is also still in a neck brace. They have to wait until she is weened off of the hard narcotics so that they can find out if she did any ligament damage to her neck. There are NO broken bones in her neck but they are still unsure about ligament damage. If she has ligament damage then she will also be in a neck brace.

She will be in the back brace for atleast 6 wks & up to 3 months. The surgery is tomorrow morning at 7:30. They say that it will take roughly 3 hrs. for the surgery & then she has 2 hrs. in the recovery room. As of right now, she can't reach the phone and it is hard for her to talk for too long. There is always one of us (my parents, my sister, me or Matt) there w/ her. If you want to call or visit her, please wait until Wednesday. The earliest she will be getting out of the hospital is Friday.

If you want to send her something, I don't have her new room number right now. I know she's on the 8th floor in the neurological department. After she gets out of surgery tomorrow & my mom gets the report on her, my mom will be heading home. She has been down at the hospital since Sunday night & has spent both nights w/ Amy. The whole family is battling either getting over from being sick or battling being sick. My 2 kids & husband now have a nasty cough and will be going to the doctors tomorrow morning. Coberly & I are trying to remind my mom that she needs to go home & get a few good solid hours of sleep so that she doesn't get sick. As you all know, this is a tough time but we are getting through it. We are all staying strong for Amy and only cry when we are not in her presence. We love her to death & just want to see her get better & be okay. It's been a LONG day and I need to try to unwind and go to sleep. I will update again sometime tomorrow early afternoon. Thank you again for everyone's thoughts & prayers.

Courtney

That was the 3rd update if you would like to read the first and second here they are.

Dane - I was just going to suggest you post this over at [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] also but I see you beat me (again!). If you can get Amy or her sister to complete an Injured Rider Intake form please do, we'd like to help if we can.

Amy - we're thinking of you, good luck with the surgery and the ensuing recovery!

Default Update #4 Out of Surgery

Her club president posted this;

I am writing this on behalf of the Hasten family who at this time have a lot to deal with.

I just got off the phone with Amy's mom. Amy had surgery this morning and the outcome, while good, wasn't as good as hoped for.

Due to nature of multiple fractures in Amy's spine, surgeons had to install a rod from T4 all the way to T12 to immobilize that section of her back. Amy will make a recovery, but that recovery will now be substantially longer than hoped for and her options for activity after recovery will most likely be limited.

One of the focal points in all of this is how much worse this could have been and how close Amy came to that point.

The sadness is Amy has lived for dirt bikes and racing desert her whole life. The knowledge that the future of this aspect is uncertain has left Amy very upset and this will be a burden on her for a very long time to come.

It is hoped that the rod in her back can eventually come out, but Amy will need all of our help and support for a long time to come. Maybe by tomorrow afternoon and probably by Thursday Amy can have visitors. In is unclear at this time exactly when she can go home, hopefully by this weekend.

She is in Loma Linda Medical Center, Unit 8200. I am certain she would appreciate any personal notes, stories or cards, even from people she doesn't know.

I will keep you updated on her condition as I can, I'm sure Courtney (her sister) will continue to keep us all updated, maybe tomorrow Courtney can tell us how fit Amy will be for visitors and phone calls.

The Checkers MC are very proud of our little girl and hopefully in time she can get back to laying out race courses that kick everyone's arse.

When you are on race Checkers Race Course C a couple of weeks from now, you can thank Amy!

They have the correct outlook...it could have been much worse. She is a lucky young lady and when she gets out of the dope induced fuzz she'll realize just how lucky she is.

Amy is a super gurl and I wish her the best. Its going to be a tough road but she will make it the best anybody can. BTW she was wearing her Leatt brace at the time of the accident. It might have been much worse if she hadn't had it on but I don't want to think about that.

This was from one of the Rescue 3 crew members as the chopper was landing to take Amy to Loma Linda Univ. MC.

Update #5 on Amy Hasten

Amy is doing well after her surgery yesterday. In addition to the injuries to her T vertebrae, the doctors have noticed several hairline cracks in a few of her C vertebrae. So, in addition to the back brace she will have to wear for the next 3 to 6 months, Amy will have to wear a neck brace for the next 6 weeks. Amy has a long road in front of her.

In a day or 2, Amy will be moved from the orthopedic section to rehab were she will stay up to 2 weeks depending on progress. So no going home for a while.

She is fit for visitors and would appreciate anyone dropping by, it really helps her deal with an otherwise very dreary environment and situation

For those wanting to help out financially with all of this, please note the following:

(1) Kim Carpenter has been very kind in taking responsibility for setting up a fiduciary bank account and Paypal account for anyone wishing to make donations.

(2) I would like to organize a "pass the hat" donation at the awards banquet. Its going to be pretty simple, but I would like a couple of her close friends to contact me to assist with the collection as I'm going to be pretty busy myself.

(3) There will be a donation jar at Checkers signups.

The Hasten Family and Amy would like to thanks everyone for their thoughts and concern, it has really helped a lot.

One of the guys on the D-37 boards made up a sticker to hand out in hopes they will bring donations to her medical expenses. To see and read about that go to [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] the sticker is Speedy's avatar. You can also browse all the update threads and read some of the comments that have been left for Amy. They are being printed out and taken to her to be read to her by her sister.
