Default Sunday on Hood

My brother is moving back to Cali the day after Christmas. So, my early present to him was a day on the mountain. The conditions were awesome! No wind, and sunny all day. I just wanted to share this shot I took with my cell phone. This is around 7000'.

This is the memorial bowl dropping into Heathers Canyon.

Motorola Sliver. I'm pretty happy with it. Holds 100 mp3's, does video, and takes photos.

Hood as in Mt Hood? The same mountain that holds captive 2 of the 3 climbers that have been lost for a # of days? Isnt that something...the very minute that you are enjoying the beauty of God's creation, 3 desperate families and hundreds of volunteers look into the bleak realization that 3 men wont be found alive. Life sure is precious isnt it?

Yes, the very one. I highly doubt any of them have been alive since last week. While it's sad, and my heart goes out to the families... It's not the first, and it's definately not the last time this mountain will take someones life. Under equiped climbers often think they can go it without a hitch. I know first hand the power mother nature has on you while on any mountain top. I've been caught in a blizzard up top before, and all you can do is dig in and wait it out. It's very nerve racking not knowing which way is what.

Their first mistake before they left was not having the proper equipment, and intel. Second, they should have never left anyone behind. They could have waited out the storm and probably kept their buddy alive. Instead they probably got thrown off the top by 100mph winds. You're lucky if you can see your own hand in front of your face in a storm. Let alone trying to navigate down 11,000' of rock and ice to look for help.

I don't want to get anything started in the wrong direction here but that is a very true statement. One of my obligations as a pilot is to gather "all available information that will affect my flight" prior to departure. The FAA says so. Flying an airplane is not an unacceptable risk. However, flying an airplane into severe weather places you in a totally unpredictable situation. You stay out of these situations by gathering "all available information" and making smart choices. Don't get me wrong here. My heart goes out to those men and their families. It is tragic.

Having said that, thanks for the pics Loki! Looks like you guys had a good time.
