Unhappy seems like all the bikes i look at have setbacks/what do ya think??

Well, im in the hunt for a new bike(ill be getting it at the end of the year). And everything i look at has a problem, the two banger 125s have a lack of low end, and the 250 thumpers have a lot of complicated maintenance...i am leaning towards the four stroke because i have a lot of articles about how to maintaint the valves and stuff, but i already know how to maintain a 2stroke and i have no idea of what all the four stroke needs regular maintenance on. and by looking at my family im gonna be a big boy, so thats another advantage of the thumper...oh yeah and are they hard to start if you maintain them?? So basically, i need to know whether the power of the four stroke is worth the maintenance if your not exactly an expert mechanic. And do they even really need that much more maintenance/or is it difficult? anyways any help will be appreciated...thanks

Are you buying this bike new or used?...i am in the exact same situation as you but im getting a used yz125....on a two stroke mxer all you have to do is change the piston/rings every half a year or so and on a 4 stroke mxer you have to do twice the oil changing, air filter cleaing and ECT....also the 4 stroke mx motors need to be tootaly redone after a year..so unless you are trying to be a REALLY seriouse racer(you still have a very good chance with a 125, but the 250 is easier to go faster on).....i would go with a 250f...but if you just gonna race somtimes for fun and just jump i would go for the 125....

I am having the exact same problem as you except I still have the option of keeping my 125. I love my 125, but I want something new, the 4 strokes are very expensive but then the 2 strokes are not as good. What to do what to do...

250 huh?....dont get too impressed by those MX guys....they are crazy!!.......what bike do u have right now?...neways good decision(sticking with two strokes)....for what you are doing you will be much more happy with a two stroke...your lucky that you are getting a new bike!...dam i could get a new bike but i would have to wait another year to get more money and i dont want to do that....newayz later...

yeah i have to get a job this summer and im 13...i meant 250f lol sry.....i am prolly gonna end up on a two smoke, i just got thru reading the yz125 or yz250f thread and it seems like the 250fs break a lot and have a lot of things that can go wrong and are VERY expensive to change top end and stuff

i ride a kx85(check out my "jumping pics" thread i just got some new pics up)

AHH, next weekend im going to ride a severely modified 2000 cr125 and a almost stock 2001 yz250f, but the 250f i have aleady ridden but its been a long time and i cant remember...but its in bad shape so i have to wait until next weekend when it gets out of the shop to fix it, basically they just havent touched it since he got it last summer(but its a good thing he has only ridden it 3 times since he got i and it was well maintained before then)

ANYWAY im on a ramble, basically im going to get to ride the bike side by side and decide which i like better!! yhay

Just remember the crazy maintenance of a 4 stroke mxer before you get sucked into the power of the 4 stroke..lol jp get whatever feels right.

I stayed with the 2 strokes because they have so many years of testing! Who cares about bottem end after you get out of that(clutch it at the gate) the bike just halls(spelling error I believe) 4 strokes (250f's) havent been out for long I've read stories about having a baseball hole in the cylinder. I'll give it 3 more years before I start considering a 4 stroke just to garrentee that the bugs are worked out. The other constriversy is the EFI thing so if your going 4 stroke wait a couple of years after it comes out just to make sure its good to go. Around 2006-08 I might have a thumper under my legs depends how the market goes with them.

If you do exactly what the maint is for a 2 stroke, it works out to be the same as a 4 stroke.

For me, my WR400 has not needed anything other than regular oil changes (that I do at the same rate as a 2 stroke)

No top end rebuilds yet (2 strokes need them more often)

A wr400 is NOT a mx BIKE though......in a 4 stroke mx bike...you need to change more then the piston though...like the valves and other things...

And to dispell a myth

4 strokes are not new tech

anybody ever road a mid 70s yamaha TT500 ?

They just have newfound interest

and the ONLY reason FI is not on these bikes now, is profit margin

with where i ride, if i got a two smoke, i would only be able to ride it for like 2 more years until they put that ban on them in places that arent closed course....haha i just read about 10-15 mag pages on four strokes in about 6 different mags, and i saw the inside and read about maintenance....its not THAT bad but it is kind of expensive(a small amount more than two strokes unless you like completely neglect it) but i can figure it out, i have a genius IQ(seriously though)
