Default Saftey alert!

Ok gang:

Most of you know that I'm an old guy that has been around dirt bike's since dirt was invented.

So please take note of what I'm telling you here & please just don't blow it off.

I just got back from the audiologist (Dr's for your hearing) & I just was fitted for 2 digital hearing aids at a cost of just a little more than a new 450 would cost you!

Let me tell you I about fell over when the Doctor said that if I had used ear plugs while riding or even using lawn equipment & ear muff's when shooting (which I did) I might have not needed the hearing aids for another 20 years!

So please buy your self's a package of the foam ear plugs & use them when riding when riding. they don't take all the noise away, they cut it down to where you don't destroy your hearing so fast!

i hear you there, since i am required to wear them at work it's easier to get used to, and you really don't notice how loud your environment can be until you have been wearing ear plugs and then take them out. i use them when on the tractor and dozer at the track, and really notice when i take them out to talk to someone.

i always thought the helmet would be enough, but this weekend i'll try some Foamies under the helmet.

Buddy of mine (mxerhale) turned me onto wearing them and I never don't wear them now. You can actually hear better with them in too.

You have to consider how old Woody is. I think he can actually hear his pulse with earplugs and that lets him know he's still alive. Pretty important for an old guy like him.

@ Jedi. You can hear a little better with them tough accually. Not so much as right next to you, but when someone is coming up. It's weird thats for sure. I used them when I was welding and could hear if someone sneezed behind me. I don't use them when riding though, with my stock pipe it's pretty quiet Now when I get my Yoshi... hummm Good note here Big "Mac"!!!

HUH??

Seriously though, you (and the doc) are absolutely correct. I remember as a baby deputy going to the range to qualify and blasting off a box of full power 357magnums without ear protection. They didn't have any for us to use so I stuffed a couple of 38spl rounds into my ears...didn't work!! Paying for it now in my later years.

just go buy some WALKERS 'game ears.....pretty cheap and you can hear a tick fart at 100 yards. Plus they shut off when a certain amount of decimels(sp) are hit. They are really good.

Like many of us, I've subjected myself to some serious db's..some workplace related some just for fun (front row at AC/DC) I certainly would not recommend it, but I very seldomly wore hearing protection

...what amazes me is how little damage I have. My baselines have always been consistent, but at my last hearing check the doc mentioned my hearing is among the best he'd ever seen. He commented, "you obviously take good care of your hearing". I said Oh yeah

You know, Howard, the really big ones are cheaper, you'd look "smart" in them

At that price, I'd be dissapointed if I couldn't get round the track with my eyes shut using only echo location...!

Sorry to hear about that Big M. Good advice for sure. I've never worn earplugs riding, I figured the helmet did a pretty good job of muffling the sound. I'll give it a try next time I go out, but more important I think I'll pass some along to my daughter and get her using them.

Last check up I had before I turned 30 the nurse looked almost shocked at how bad my hearing was. Told my doc, maybe I played the music too loud. He said no, that has little to do with it, a large part is hereditary. I'm sure the bikes and age don't help things any, though.(I'm not saying we're old )
/Mike
