Default play in the crank rod

Ok I just took off the the whole piston so the crank rod is exposed. I was just wondering if it is ok to have a little play for the rod. The rod can move about 1mm from side to side but not up and down. Does this mean the lower bearing are bad? Thanks.

probably not. ANY up and down and it's history, but it should have some side to side. i can't remember how much though.

Sounds like time for new bearings.
