Default OT need some computer help...

i know it is way off topic but i need a way to speed my Dell 2400 up. i have no games at all on it, not even the ones that come on it like solitary, mine sweeper, you know those. the only programs on it is photoshop 5.0, kodak easy share(digital camera) i think thats it. this thing is so slow, i have disabled alot of crap that has lowered the protection of it and am open, or close to being, to some viruses i think. i have dial up that connects right away and brings some stuff right up. but most of everything i look up, takes forever! anyone know a way to help out???
Thanks:
Ryan

The first thing I would do is run a program to get rid of adware and spy programs. You can get free utilities to do this at download.com. Also, defrag your disk.

I'm sure one of the computer experts on here will have some good advice.

Anytime Ryan.

I bet you will be surprised at how much spyware and stuff you find on your computer!!
I have firewall and anit-virus programs constantly running, and I still get 3-5 spyware files each day........
They are pretty harmless, but it shows that they can get on easy.

Are you regularly doing disk clean-up ??
If not then I recommend doing it.
ALso, run a disk de-fragment. This takes time so make sure you don't need the computer for a while...
Good luck.

Make sure to clear your cache, remove all cookies and delete temp files.

What version of windows are you running? 98, 2000, XP, ect?

i have windows XP. i do normally do a de-frag about once in a week. i also remove files and temp files that have been viewed from the net. it holds like 5-6 files with over 300 pics. every little thing LOL. i forgot how to clear the cookies, last time i did that i messed it up by removing cookies( wouldnt let me post or view most pages) i just aint to literate on comps. any more, its all for the quad LMAO it's all good. i took all sorts of stuff i dont even use any more and it is now a little faster. one day i am taking it to a shop to have more RAM/speed put in. bigger memory card that is.

THREE WORDS......CABLE CABLE CABLE. I've had all other types of hook ups to the internet and cable smokes them all big time. If you ever have cable you will never go back. The speed is incredible compared to anything else. It's well worth the extra money.

Stykmaster is right. Cable is definately sweet. But it sounds like you have viruses or adware that are slowing you down. Have you downloaded any security upgrades from Microsoft for XP? I did the other stuff people mentioned here and it helped for a little while until more adware tore up my system. After I downloaded the upgrade, it has been much smoother. I was in a similar situation as you. I hope that helps.

www.microsoft.com

Go to Windows Upgrade.

It will scan your system and tell you what you need...it's easy.

One other thing, that upgrade package is pretty big. Almost 80MB if my memory serves me correct. So, if you're going to dowload it with dial up, do it at night before you got to sleep and let it download.

The upgrade helps alot with security issues, viruses and adware spyware crap.

Another option, I forgot to mention is restoring your computer to an earlier time. XP allows you to do that. That depends on how long you have been experiencing problems. If it for a short period, you could go back and restore your windows without losing your data. However, I would strongly urge you backup your files.
