Default OT: Great workout...buy some horses!!

Well, it is that time of the year again. We recently had a full load, truck and trailer, of hay delivered to the Tin Star compound. That equals about 400 bails of hay at 100+ pounds a bail.

So, for the last several days when I get home from work I have been moving and restacking 36-48 bails a night. All this talk from people here at work and their exotic workout programs pale in comparison to what I have been doing. My shoulder muscles feel like they have become completely dislodged from my skeleton, my knees have been twisted like Gumby from slipping between the stacks, same for my ankles and feet, my hands feel like they have completed the Paris to Dakar Rally in one day and my sinuses are so full of hay dust that every time I sneeze the local cows and horses can eat for a day.

Work out programs???...not me...besides, round IS a shape!!!

ha ha I use to buck hay all the time. Not many people ever get the honor of doing it. I feel your pain bro. That crap gets everywhere. I'm an avid weightlifter and would not go back to bucking hay!! That will kill a good man.

I hauled hay during summers through high school and college. Hard work! It always took about 3 weeks to get in shape each May. Blisters became callouses.
I wouldn't want to do it now. Sounds like you're doing a good job of pacing yourself, E!

I can say that i've never been a hay bailer, but i did cut banana's when i was younger, the worst part was when you cut the trunk and tree layed over you had to put your other hand in the bunch and pull it down on to your shoulder in ready for the overhand chop of the stem. It was not uncommon for large hairy spiders or small snakes to quickly run up your arm and onto your shoulders and neck The worst thing was you wern't allowed to drop your bunch and bruise your fruit, they got mighty upset about that I found that job to be quite unfruitfull and throw your clothes away, banana sap stains for life, roo gutting is much easier!

Why can't you just have them delivered to where you want them?

Straw isn't nearly as bad as hay. We put up about 2,000 bales this summer in two days with 6 guys. For hay, round bales are the way to go. I like the tractor and balefork, better than my back.

The stacks get squeezed off the truck and trailer but the squeeze cannot get into where we want the hay stacked.

Below is a hay squeeze and they can move a stack of 64 bails at a time.

I hauled hay all through my highschool days like Jedi and was really proud to share that .10/bale we got. Problem was, the farmer that owned the land drove the truck/trailer rig and he would put it in granny gear and never stop for anything. That may seem slow but when you got worn out and dropped one or caused two or more to fall off the trailer, it was double time! I used to be in such good shape...

Is this hay for horses that earn you money?

Being surrounded by farms & hayfields, I've done more than my share of balin'. Around here, our biggest fear was snakes. We have a rare breed of pygmy rattlesnake (locally called a "black snapper") that often gets caught in a bale. If you grab a bale and one of those has its head stickin' out, you can get bit. The things are mean as crap...they have rattles but don't use 'em and they're more potent than a timber-rattler. I hate snakes!

I learned well (the hard way) when I was a teenager not to mess with guys that stacked hay.

Sorta. We have a couple of brood mares that we breed to our donkey stallion named Buckshot. He and the mares sure can produce some nice mule foals that we then sell. The others we have we use to ride.

Ernie, we let some people graze their horses on the back block of our place once. They were bringing hay bails in to feed them, now i've got every noxious weed and thorn you could imagine growing on my block

We just sold our horses last year thankfully - I don't miss the workout! Bucking hay is only one of the chores that go along with keeping those animals.... I do miss having them around sometimes though.

Hahahaha, gotta keep the theme of the Tin Star Ranch!!! At one time we had two stallions but they were constantly fighting each other and we didn't want to risk any injuries to either of them. The one we sold was named Justice. He wasn't as nice as Buckshot!!!

I can see where Justice and Buckshot don't always go hand in hand. In fact, I think Buckshot might be what I want to keep close by.
