Default One Extremely Trashed Engine!

Many of you know that jr.'s bike didn't make it through Sunday's practice at GMB V. The rod broke just below the piston and the engine is completely toasted. It's UGLY! I'll be searching for an engine now.

The engine case split.

Don't know. Heard a "click" then nothing. We bought the crank used with less than 30 hours on it. $75. Seems like a bad choice now.

Yep. Only hours before we headed south to Splendora. I was hoping we would find something that we did wrong that caused the problem but we discovered nothing. The top of the rod is frozen solid around the piston pin. No movement whatsoever.

The piston came out of the cylinder easily but what's left of the rod will NOT budge.

I have seen a ton of engines and cranks and if that crank had 30 hours on it I would be REALLY surprised. Maybe if it was 30 hours on it with an AMA pro riding, but not just normal folks. For the actual rod to break and not have the bearings or something else go south means that rod was fatigued so bad that it broke before the bearings did. I am betting that it was ridden on the rev limiter for a very long time.

That sucks. I might make a visit to the local retailer who sold it to you and have a bit of a chat. Unless the crank bearing seized, the rod is usually one of the last things to go. I might send the link to this post to RHC over on Thumpertalk. He knows just about all there is to know about those motors.

Great weekend though. Sorry bout the motor.

James

On my 02 YZF the main bearing seized, in which broke the rod. My bike had lord knows how many hours on it. I bought the bike in 02 and it blew up in 05 and I had not touched the motor since I bought it.

Oil starvation? Blocked oil passage? Just a thought.

If the piston pin/rod is seized, I'd look for a blockage. Doesn't that motor have a mister that feeds from below the piston? Was it getting oil?

Yes, it has a mister. I don't know how to tell if it was getting oil but I'll check it out. Thanks. I'll post a pic if anything is obvious.
