Default O/T Ever lost your computer password?

I haven't bought or sold from Ebay in some time, but recently I decided to go out and poke around. The only problem was, I couldn't recall my password and the password "help" function for the site wasn't working correctly. However, if I came in through the front door of the site, my computer would recall the proper password, but it would simply come up as ********** and I had absolutely no idea what it was. Perplexed.

Consequently, I downloaded a very helpful utility called Password Reveal Pro. It analyzes the ********** characters on your computer and spits out an intelligible interpretation that you can read and identify. If you want to download a trial copy (and that is all that I needed to find my information), you can go here.

It is a really helpful utility to have on hand. And don't worry--no one can hack your password unless they are at your computer and know your actual login name.

Just a side note on the whole password issue.
Don't use one of the password managers that you see online, such as Gator or whatever they are pushing these days. Basically what that does is organize all of your passwords and user ids and anything else you put in there, into one nice little file, which is highly exploitable.
I've worked as a system engineer for the past 15 years for several fortune 500 companies, managing thousands of workstations and users, and I have to say that password management utilities have to be the biggest security risk I've seen yet. You are essentially offering all of your information in 1 easy package. Even if they say the app is encrypted, someone had to program the encryption, so it can be undone and easily decrypted. There is nothing that is completely fool proof, except for common sense. If you have to ask if it is safe, it probably isn't.
Just a friendly PSA. Now, back to your regulalrly scheduled program already in progress.

I tried it once but decided never again to use the automated password deal--but not for the good reasons you outline. It is just that every time you sneeze in front of the computer, that stupid box is coming up asking you if you want to put a password in. Downright annoying and, with all things annoying, it is history.

The nice thing about this utility is that it doesn't run in the background or anything. You only open it up if you need it to recover your lost password (God, Allah, or Darwin forbid).

I use a program named Any Password to store all of my passwords. Any Password lets you store all of your websites passwords in a single place, so that when you can't remember the password you can go look it up. Any Password is secured by a single password, so all you have to remember is one password to get into Any Password and your set. It's free too! http://www.anypassword.com

Not website related...but I work in IT and was oncall a couple months ago when a Cisco switch crashed. I had to drive 40 miles out to the location where the hardware was and replace the supervisor module. I was on the phone with the operations center and they said they had communications with it and would load the config. When you replace the board all the memory is replaced so the passwords and config have to be reloaded....I drove back to the operations center to verify everything was operational so I could go back to bed (did I mention that this was at 2AM on a Friday night/Saturday morning and I had planned on riding at 6AM Saturday) well I get there and the guy loading the config had fat fingered the password and couldnt figure it out...long story short we had some problems with the break sequence so I had to drive 40 miles back to break into the switch locally......talk about MAD!

That sucks about the switch crashing. Especially since I've never seen one crash in 15 years. Not so lucky. Been there. To top it off IT usually gets no respect either.
