Default Need Help with suspension Tuning

over winter or early next spring im getting a 4 stroke 250. right now i race CRF230F, and the bike isnt fast enough for me and everybody else in my class has 250 4 strokes, and 125's. Then yesterday i was racing this girl had a YZ250F and she had it tuned way down so it almost looked like my 230. but again my 230 has electric start and im only 5'4. i cant kick start a yz250f full seat height of 39.2 but i can ride it great. so i was thinking if i got a KX250F or RMZ250 (the smaller seat heights of the 250's) if i could get the suspension tuned down. how low do you think the seat height would be? and i could have some other stuff down to it so it would be smaller.

-i had 1 other option for a 250 for me to get a custom made one from service honda but it will be $7000. i dont think my parents will pay for that.

Suspension companies can usually lower seat height by an inch. So that's how much lower it'd be.

You can also cut out some seat foam to lower it a lil more, maybe a half inch off that.

Have you given any thought to getting a KX100 or a KTM105 or something like that? Something more then an 80, but less then a 125? I'd certainly be more competitive then your 230 but would be smaller then a 250f....

Well, it really sounds to me like you should be considering a 100 2 stroke. The KTMs especially have good suspension (comparable to a "full size" bike) and it will certainly have better suspension then your 230. It'll also have a better motor then your 230, and be very easy to kick. It would also come with excellent brakes, wheels, handlebar, etc which would all be upgrades from your 230...

well you're still growing (correct?) when I got my bike I was about 5'4" (yes I grow 3 inches in 4 months lol) and I sometimes had to use a little step ladder to start it at first, but I grew into it and developed some technique, I can get both feet on the tiptoes, or one tiptoe down on the left or right side, but not flat foot. I would consider the 250F, instead of having a bike you may need to sell in a year or less because you grew out of it.

Any good suspension shop can lower your suspension as much as you would like. You'll get the best results if you stay around 2 to 3 inches lower. They will have to revalve of course for the smaller amount of travel, use spacers and cut the springs to the proper length. It will cost a little more than normal but, won't it be worth it to be able to touch the ground?

I thought I read somewhere that the most you could lower was an inch? If you can get more then an inch, then you should be set with a 250f!

well im a 15 year old girl and i think im done growing, i dont think i would get a KTM105 or a 85 or a 2 stroke 100 my parents hate 2 strokes. i really need a 250f, on a full size YZ250F i can touch the ground tippy toes.

-but CROGG really the suspension could be 2 to 3 inches lower, that would be excelllent if i did that on a KX250F. how much would this cost, my friend had something done to the suspension in his bike he put about $1500 into it.

Factory Connection (the company that does my suspenders) will do it for free with a revalve. Expect to drop 600 or so on the revalve though.

Try contacting some suspension companies and find out how much they'd charge to do it. They'll be able to give you a much more accurate answer then we could!

We have a very good suspension tuner that isn't too far from you. He's in Minnesota, and does awesome work. I know he can lower your bike without much problem (of course you'll need to get it first). As previously stated, they can be lowered pretty much as much as you want to a point. They lower SuperMoto bikes 2 inches I believe, and flat trak bikes by at least that far too.

Shoot Jeff Howe (www.trakcontrol.com) an email. He is very helpful and will answer any questions you have.

You can also post this question in the suspension forum (which he mods) and he'll give you some feed back there as well.
