Default mixing gas ratio? 32:1 or 20:1?

I bought a new 03 cr125 (my first bike) almost 2 months ago and was wondering what is the correct gas/oil ratio to run. In my manual i got with the bike it says to mix 20:1 (cm type 32:1) i had no idea what cm type was so i ran 20:1 to be on the safe side. I went to my dealer and a parts guy who rides a bike said to run 32:1, i asked another one of my dirt bike friends what ration he ran and he told me he runs 20:1. So i still to this day and running 20:1 so i dont cause any damage, i have not fouled a plug either on running that ratio which leads me to think 20:1 is the correct ratio but i am still unsure. So can someone tell me what ratio to run? thanks, dave.

Technically you should get just a bit better performance running the 20:1 from a compression stand point. The extra oil will help to ensure the ring seal is better. But from a jetting, carburation stand point 32:1 would be better.

I personally would run the 32:1. A lot of it depends on your oil that you are using for premix. Some recommend 50:1 other and most are 32:1.

One thing to consider is the more oil you run the leaner the fuel mixture would be. The oil displaces the fuel. For those that tune right on the edge this is an issue. For most people they are jetted rich enough that it doesn't cause any problems.

The suggested pre mix ratio is 32:1 for almost every 2 stroke. I have 4 of them, and I do ALL the maintenance. I have a 2001 CR 125 and just like the 125's AND 250's.. I run 40:1. The reason for this is because while it may be a touch less oil than recommended, (the amount of oil has NOTHING TO DO WITH your bike running lean or rich, that's needle clip or jetting) It keeps the power valves cleaner, longer. The recommended 32:1 is for a benchmark, or safe zone, that manufacturers give, because they have no idea where in the country you (the purchaser) lives. Altitude and climate have adjustments that may be required. All my bikes run perfect with 40:1 and I have less work to do when I change top ends. I always run Castor 927. It burns the cleanest out of everything we've tried. The top ends last longer only if you "baby" your bike. Everyone knows you cannot "baby" a 2 stroke. Good luck

My bikes have always recommended 20:1 also and I have always run 32:1 with not problems.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I will run 32:1 from now on. But I still have one more question, as i previosly said the owners manual said to run 20:1 (CM type 32:1).

Does anyoneknow what CM type means?

The ratio that you run your oil at does effect your jetting
the more oil you run the leaner your jetting will be.
For a 125 or 80 that is ridden hard I would use 32:1
If you are just ridding trails , with a good oil you should be ok
with 40:1.
Just wanted to clear the air, on the jetting statement.

I agree, I have heard the the oil ratio does affect jetting, but that it isn't a way to jet your bike. Run the correct ratio and jet it as you should.

Thanks for the backup on the jetting. I wasn't going to get into it.

Although it did make the hair on the back of my neck stick up. And I had to shut the computer down.

I would say 32:1

There is such a thing as too much oil, and you will probably be much more prone to fouling plugs at 20:1, and the amount of "spooge" will probably increase.

Stick to 32:1 and you will be fine.

I read an article once on this. The did dyno tests on a bike (or maybe more then one bike) which proved horsepower increases all the way up to 16:1. So, according to that study, more oil = more horsepower.

It was a long time ago, so I don't remember the details. My guess is that the horsepower difference between the 70:1 ratio and the 16:1 was at most 1 horsepower.

And, since you've only been riding a short time, you simply won't notice the power difference between 20:1 and 32:1. I think you'd be fine either way.

Now go ride!

I was thinking the same thing about fouling plugs. But when i run 20:1 my bike starts great, runs great and i have not fouled a plug yet in the 2 months i have been riding the bike but from the advice I have been getting Im gonna go with 32:1 from now on.

DAAAANG Carl! 323:1?? sheesh thats like dipping your finger in the oil then into a gallon of gas :

j/k i HOPE you meant 32:1

i also run 32:1 without a single problem, but when i go to the dunes i run either 26:1 or 24:1 for the extra protection. after tearing my bike down and inspecting everything, my pison and cylinder are still in pretty good condition, too bad the piston was the wrong size, it was 53 thousandtsh too small : but the cross hatch pattern is still in perfect condition. it may be the oil i used, but the powervalves were pretty gummed up though. golden spectro at 32:1? i have only had around 5-6 hours of dunes time and like 150 in the dirt (: ) so it shouldnt be the extra oil in there.

If your bike likes 20:1, and runs fine with it, and that is what you feel comfortable with, do it. Opinions are always good, but in the end do what you are comfortable with.

Now that's saving on the oil. That must be some good stuff.
