Broken femur, tibia & fibula and torn ACL twice (same knee) all on separate occasions, not to mention collar bone, fingers and most recently my arm. Sorry Jas, I'll also take the broken bones femur included (even with the 6 weeks traction) over ligament damage. Last edited by pragmatic393; 03-17-2004 at 01:28 PM.

Prag I hear ya, but 6 weeks traction mean 6 weeks not working. I'll take the knee brace and back to work in a few days...Over losing my income.... I agree with Jaybird....lets just stay healthy...

I want some but the price is way too much for my hs budget. I need about $300 to fix up my 80. (200 for a gas tank, 50 for a clutch kit, 35ish for rear tire/tube + shipping = -/+300). Anyway, the only thing i have a problem with is that i don't ride nearly hard enough to see that being a problem. Most of where i ride is tight woods with some wide up areas but the parts i loose control most are in the tight stuff, and in that case im going like 2-3mph so i can just stop when i want to basically. I have knee guards, they are cheap but effective!

I'm with Faded on this one. I too have had multiple knee surgeries dating as far back as 1974. I use a prescription brace for skiing because of the possible twisting but none for riding (it will not fit in my boots). A proper brace has to be snugged down tight to do any good. This pressure from the straps puts a strain on the muscles. It makes your leg tired. Tired legs are not good for knees. What if the knee brace also increased your chance of a certain kind of knee injury by 10%. Would the 10% chance of avoiding another type of knee injury be worth it? Bob

A few days ago, I read an article in a local magazine about Stefan Everts. In this magazine they looked at all the gear that Stefan had on during a race. This is what he had to say about kneeprotection. Stefan:"I still ride with the classic kneepads instead of the braces what most mx riders wear. Because I usually touch my gastank with my knees after a jump, I've let Acerbis make a special pad with some gel on the sides of the gas tank".

I recently sustained a mild knee injury probably because I sit at a desk for a huge percentage of my waking hours. I'm considering braces. This experience has opened my eyes to the necessity of starting a focused workout schedule. I can see the point that you're making, Faded, but turning away additional protection just seems like a perspective which ignores logic. What I mean is, yes, you loose out on the opportunity for those 4 hours of condiitoning you might usually have, but if you bail it could all go out the window. Whereas, under a regular workout schedule, using braces while riding, the person in question will build strenth and protect his knee(s) when he needs it most. Over time the legs/knees will grow stronger. -dauk

hrm, that's an interesting point Bubbagums. I've never worn a proper knee brace. But I can see how limited muscle movement could potentailly cause additional inujuries.

I have two bad knee's due to arthritis and several injuries. I went to a specialist who gave me a presciption for knee braces about a year ago. The brand is Breg which he said the pro football linemen wear. They look an awfull lot likt CTI's to me. Cost was about $1400 with my ins. paying for 80 percent. They are great , don't realize I even have them on. Only wear them while riding or when hunting high in the mountains. Am sure they have saved my knee's from twisting injuries several times. On a downside I had a high speed, high side two weeks ago with several injuries many I still have , one of which is a broken left fibula exactly where my knee brace bottom strap goes around my calf. This is the small bone. Also screwed up my left ankle. Will I continue to wear my knee braces, you bet. Look how much force it took to bend and break my leg. What do you suppose it would have done to my bad knee with out the brace? Plus I feel lost with out them now, kinda like riding without a helmet. Be careful out there, july3

I've got a friend who can hook me up with a set of EVS Web braces for cost. I was planning to get the Asterisk Cell braces though. I've heard lots of good stuff about Asterisk, not as much about EVS. Do you EVS guys have any complaints about the braces ? Thanx, Dauk

I use knee gaurds, as I cannot afford braces. I will I had purchased the guards when I first started riding though. I have fell 3 times on the same knee. It's my left knee which takes the brunt of my falls.... Unfortunately I cannot feel the skin on my left knee. You can pinch or do whatever and I don't feel it in this spot. Not too mention aches and pains whenever I fall on it or let it hit ground. Bottom line is, get some form of guards! There is no-one on this site who can say they can't afford knee guards! I bought my Thor gaurds for $7.95 from MxSouth. Check on ebay and online moto stores for bargains.
