Default I could trade for a '99 WR400?

My friends father is willing to sell me his '99 WR400 for the price i could get for my bike easily. Is there anything wrong with the 99 wr? I am really thinking about doing it because its a four stroke, which makes it easy to bring it through the tight stuff around here which will be a nice change, but im scared it wont have the explosion and fun factor my cr250 has? Everything has been done to it with the exception of motor work, and the bike is practically mint. What really makes me happy is the fact that rebuilds will be far far away . Any body got any ideas?

It will be a more tame animal than what your compared to. But that generally means more rider-friendly through tight bush or trails. If you mostly ride trails then I would pick it up.

JMO though.

I've got a 98 WR400 with some mods

Drag strip at the local track/trail, I have not been beat yet, and I've gone against quite a few 250 two strokes

My favorite part is passing pulling the front end up

The engine is the same as the YZ400's, most people by now have adjusted the timing to match the YZ timing.

Ok great! I dont think I will mess with the timing or anything, because reliability is what Im about. I am about to go check the scoot out ill get back to you guys asap. How often do you cheeck your valve clearances Megadeath? Im going to see what EG says about this bike, im really considering it, but considering i JUST rebuilt my CR, and i think im in love with it, it will be hard to impress me but well see. Have a good day guys!

Also, lets talk some maintenance here. I am an oil beliver, I change it about ever 2-3 rides-oils not a factor. What/how often do i have to servie the cam chain? How often are valve adjustments needed, and what about top ends? Does anyone know approx how much horsepower this bike puts out? I dont want to buy a bike that is too complicated for my mechanical skill, thats one reason my 2 stroke is so comforting . Thanks again guys.

I just rode it and it plain rips. The only complaint i have is that the seat was real high, and although it feels good because im tall it feels top heavy. Also i noticed the pegs were attactched to the frame which I understand to be a problem with XR's, in that they bend or break off. Anmy thoughts/opinions/advice on this?

Is it faster than your CR!? I mean I know those are quick trail bikes but I can't see how it could be faster than a CR250R

Live2Ride... If you are looking for a great trail bike pick it up. You are right they are tall and a little top heavy. Other then that I have NO complaints about my 99. She is stone reliable and I have not done much. I change my oil every other ride and the air filter every ride. I have checked out my valves but they were with in specs so I did nothing there. I ride some to the rockiest trails around and have broken foot pegs but never the mounts.

HL that sounds good, im glad to be talking to someone with this bike. I really am thinking of getting it, i have my current bike in the paper for a little more than I expect just to see if it sells. Do you ever service the cam chain? Also, for some reason Eric-Gorr.com isnt working for me, i want to see what he has to say on it. If anyone could copy, paste what he says ill be more than thankful. Thanks alot guys.

With some mods it'll be faster than a CR250, quite a bit faster in a drag race, on a track it's all rider. The WR/YZ 400-450's are very powerfull bikes, coming off a KX500 and going onto the WR was not a big change for me, the power is very similar.

There's a few of these 400-450's putting out 60hp at the wheel with mods, mine should be in the high 50's with current mods.

I do oil changes every 3 rides

changing to YZ cam timing wont affect reliability, and the grey wire mod wont either, and has probably already been done.

I've got a 444cc 13:1 kit on mine, it's a fun ride.

Valves should only need to be checked once a season, the wear is minimal on these engines.

I've got an extra tall seat foam on mine, much easier to move around on, more padding for me too. The other alternative is bolt on the YZ seat/tank/shrouds, that'll make it easier to move around on, and it wont feel so wide in the tank.

Megadeath- good read, lots of good info. thanks a lot. Im leaning each way at different times, liek today i brought the cr in the sand, and i really doubt the wr will be as good as the cr in sand, but then again, i kick myself in the arse everytime im clutching like crazy pumping my arms up through tight twisty stuff. I think the problem with me is i do a little bit of everything when i ride, so everybike is going to do something better/worse than the other one. Im really just along for the ride here, if my cr sells, ill get the wr, if it doesnt, so be it. Meanwhile, ill be reading up on eric gorrs site about tricks for the wr just incase i do get her. Thanks everyone!
