The LEAST amout,

For small tricks like one handers and stuff a couple of ft of air will do which means you dont need much of a run up. But obviously the better trick you are going to pull off your going to need more height thus more of a run up. Do what you feel comfortable with Buff! Have Fun!!

Hows that dirt jump coming along in your back yard?

buff.. if yur gunna learn tricks i would honestly suggest buying a ramp.. you can set it as close to a landing as you want a move it back when you want to go bigger.. ive been getting into it and ramps are way easier.. they never change.. you hit it once and it will be the same the next time.. so you can think about what your going to pull off instead of how to make the jump.. and i dont mean go get a super kicker and set the gap at 70 feet.. i would say if you have no experience start at about 15-20 feet and go from there.. and when you get to about 30 feet you can easily pull double cans, cans, heel clickers, nothings, and things lesser then that

Why?

Are you considering trying this?

You can probably judge for yourself by experimenting on your mound of dirt.
You need decent height before you can start trying freestyle moves.

This trail riding pic is a few yrs. old and only about 4 ft high. Kinda goofy but the crash will still hurt. Gotta grab back FAST, that's the trick

Lookit you go, WFO!

When I rode a quad, one handers were no big deal. I don't know though, something about being on a bike and intentionally taking my hands off the bars just feels so wrong. Yes, I'm skeered.
