Default Honda CRF230F/150F, or other?

For a beginner motorcycle rider, with significant mountain bike experience, are either of these bikes a good choice? I'm 5'9", 160 lbs, and I want to ride trails, and maybe an occasional day or to at the MX track, but trails are certainly the priority. I like the fact that these bikes are in the $3000 range, because, as much as I'd love to, I can't afford a $5000 bike. However, I don't like the fact that, as far as I know, neither the fork nor the rear shock has adjustable damping. Between those two, which we be better for my needs? Are there any other recommendations for a similar price?

The CRF230F would be a great bike for you!

If you were willing and able to spend a little bit of money on suspension setup/revalve for your weight and speed, it would do a world of difference but you may be happy with the stock stuff anyway so if you can take it for a ride I say go for it!

Good luck!

The 230 and 150 is under powered, under suspended, and extremely heavy. I believe the 150 is like 250 lbs. That is a lot of weight for that size bike. Just my $.02

OK, thanks for the feedback. I guess I'll just have to figure out some way to buy a used 250 four-stroke.

I am about 150lbs, and for what it was, the 230 didnt feel to bad. If your talking going to the track once or twice a year, it MIGHT not be that bad. Then again I was in a feild and went over a tiny table tops a few times and only a couple wheelies and high speed runs, so I dont have too much to back it up...Save every nickel and penny and go for a 125, or buy used...

i have a 2004 crf230f i race it, its a horrible bike to race, so im getting a 250. but its a great trail bike, and it can go on mx track easily, and i had it on a tight arenacross track its goes fine, but just dont expect to be fast out there. for what you wanna do ride trails the most and go to the mx track occasionaly i would say get the CRF230F it would be great for your height. there really fun bikes.

The CRF230 is a great trail bike, but I don't think it would be very good on the MX track. If I recall correctly it is in the 220 - 230 pound range dry, but does have an electric start. It is also lower to the ground than the 250's or 125 2-strokes.

Is the CRF230/150 a bike that I would outgrow (ability-wise) before very long, or would it probably be a good bike for at least a couple years? It other words, is it a "learner" bike? Also, would I be better off with the 230 or 150?

You would be about perfect for the CRF230F. But as everyone said, don't plan on many MX track trips, there is actually a kid that comes down to this one track on a CRF230, and runs a couple laps every now and then, he makes it around pretty well.

For trail riding I'd say it be great for you, but you probably would outgrow the power after a couple months. But it seems a little scary to put a first time rider on a 125.

It is hard to say how fast you would outgrow the 230, as that depends on how quickly your abilities progess, and how gnarlly you like your trails. For your size, the 230 should be a good trail bike for all but the nastier trails, but it is never going to be a good race or MX bike. As for the 150 vs 230, I would recommend the 230 for your weight assuming you are comfortable with the seat height. You might also want to consider a smaller 2-stroke if you are serious about the MX tracks.

I'm definitely not serious about MX tracks, it would be on occasion, strictly for fun, although I do want to be able to handle whatever jumps I may encounter on trails. Instead of buying a new CRF, should I consider a used 250 four-stroke?

Actually, I think a kdx200 is best for ya. You can get a used one, like 3 years old for 2-2/12 grand....The bikes really rip, and would probably be better on the track then the crf's, yet will smoke them on the trail..

Seat hight might dictate what you can ride well. Go to a couple of dealers and see which ones feel comfortable. You will certainly get a much better suspension with a newer 250 four stroke, or a 125 2-stroke, but they do have a taller seat height. I have also heard good things about the KDX200, so you might want to check it out too.
