Default Get Out And Live a Little!

Dirt biking is dangerous. We all need to ride with caution and good judgement. We need to wear the best gear we can afford and stay within our personal limits. Having said that.............. I'd like to share this.

You ride a dirt bike so you don't qualify as one. Sounds like you are a "smart" rider, though.

Dirt Bikes and all my gear are the safest things I have/do. No problems there, I agree with the idea David, its general living that gets me in the surgical suite. Lets ride on Bro!!!!

Amen to that. Life is too short to worry about what might happen and live your life in a bubble.
Id much rathar die doing something I love than to worry about what might happen and live a life of regret.

I had written a blog on MySpace after my accident on June 10th and it pretty much sums up what Jedi is saying. I had to clean it up a little bit but here it is. I was a little ticked off the day I wrote it.

After breaking my ankle in a recent dirt bike accident, I have received numerous comments from people that range from "You are too old" to "When are you going to grow up?". Quite frankly, that just irks me off to no end! 90% of the people telling me this are sports fans. To me it is quite ironic because they are rooting on the rough play of football and other sports yet condemn anything related to motorcycles. I choose to be a player in life and not a spectator. Life was meant to be enjoyed this way and not sitting on a couch eating potato chips watching every game on TV.

Those same people do not realize that they probably have their kids in one of the two most dangerous sports in America; High School Football and Cheerleading. Do a search on sports related injuries and you will see that by far, cheerleading and "Friday Night Lights" football has injured more kids than any other sport including motocross. Do people tell their kids to stop if they get hurt playing in those sports? No, they push them to get back out there as soon as possible and pay the best doctors in the US to help get little Johnny or Suzie back to playing as fast as possible! Why then do these same people think a injury such as mine is because I haven't "grown up"? I say kiss my boot to those that think like that. I'm going to live life and see/do things most people wont doing what I do. I refuse to sit on the sidelines being a spectator! Which do you choose to do?

I have been on crutches since June 10th and will be on them until the middle of August. It has been an inconvienience and has humbled me but I wouldn't change a thing. Bones heal, which is quite a shock to some people it seems. The pain is temporary but the memories of riding in Colorado along the Continental Divide at 13,000 ft last a lifetime. Trials and tribulations are what make you feel alive, not watching TV. I do not want to be like most people and regret not trying something that carried a risk. I grew up being told I was a fool for "sticking my head out". That same person did nothing but sleep on the recliner all weekend and had no hobbies. Wasn't America founded on people taking risks?

I don't expect everyone to convert to my way of thinking but I just wish they would leve me alone when something I do seems dangerous to them! Go back and sit in your recliner, smoke your ciggeretts and let me be! I'm ALIVE because of what I do! Like the saying goes, "Life is not meant to be lived safely and without risks so that you arrive at the grave with a body in perfect condition. I intend to slide into my grave with bruises and bumps laying it sideways with roost flying and a smile on my face yelling DAMN THAT WAS FUN!".

An old song by the Eagles says it well. "It's better to burn out than to fade away". I say that because I watched my grandfather fade away to nothing, every day for the last two years of his life. Every day I had to watch him get progressivly worse and had to do more and more to just get him to the next meal or to the recliner so he could sleep or clean up after he used the bathroom.. He never took a risk other than driving to work. I do not want to live like that and be kept alive by drugs so that I can drool and be carried to the toilet and then sleep 20 hours a day. Thank you modern medicine! I love my grandfather dearly and miss him very much but to see a person so intent upon living a safe life and not take any chances go through that as a reward just makes me sick.

I don't think that after 30 years of riding in some places that most people would call insane and racing hard with only a broken ankle and a broken Transverse Process as an inury is that bad! My grandfather broke his ankle just by going to work!

I agree Keetoman. I've had one of those bad crashes and have carried daily body pains with me for over twenty years. But Im still ridding and dont plan to quit any time soon. My passion besides dirtbikes is ultralight aircraft. I fly several different types and even hold an instructor rating. When people start talking smak on dirtbikes, I bring up flying and before long they forget about my little terra sport.
