Default Digital Camera Recommendations

My HP digital camera bit the dust and I am in the market for a new one. Four hundred dollars is about the top that I intend to pay, and that includes the larger size storage memory, etc.

Primary use is family, Ebay items, and off-road motorcycle pics. Some of the reviews I have read seem to give high marks to the Canon A80 and A70 series.

Any brand and model recommendations that I should not overlook?

Make sure you've considered the Sony DSC-P10. I've used this one and it's awesome. 5mp resolution with mpeg. Nice for action shots. You can knock about $90 off the price buying a standard battery. I think this price includes the Li extended battery.
Sony DSC P10

I have some friends that use the Fuji and I think brck also bought this Fuji. I have not used it:

Fuji S3000

Good luck, Hows the ribs?

I have the Olympus C-750UZ, but I think it may still be out of your price range. It's a great camera and has a 10X optical zoom which is worth the extra $$ IMO. The Canon A70/80 series is an excellent choice, it really is. I work with a lady who has the A70 and I've played with it enough to show her how the features work. Very nice camera, Excellent price. Costco has the best price on memory too.

see i didn't think the opt zoom was worth it. Bc when you put it on the computer, you can always just crop it anyways.

But in my case it was iether my camera 3.2 mp or a 2.2 mp with optical zoom. i choes the more Mp bc of cropping, an dam happy i did.

I have an older Olympus, the C-700, it has the 10x optical zoom as well. It's only a 2.1 mp, but it does the job for me....for now. I really like our Canon video camera and can't imagine the quality of the digital cameras to be any less. Whatever you go for, I would get the highest optical zoom you can. It is a huge benefit.

Tyler, the optical zoom is nice because it actually brings the picture in closer to you...much like a standard 35mm camera, and the quality is better. With digital zoom, you're just changing the size of the pixels...as I understand it anyway, I could be completely wrong.

Pragmatic, ribs are a little better--glad I decided to take all of your advice and not ride today.

I am going to see if I can dig a little further--maybe on consumerreport.com. I am glad some of you mentioned how much you like the zoom feature (Char--10x sounds nice!).

My friend ordered the Canon A80 a couple of months ago at a website that beat Best Buy's price by quite a bit. Whichever camera I end up going with, this site will most likely have the best price. Check these prices out--I can't find any cheaper:

www.butterflyphoto.com

Say, does anyone know what camera Zoohoot and Imahoot use for the pics on their website? Those pictures are very sharp and crystal clear . . . .

I've got a Canon A70 and I love it, wouldn't ever buy anything other than Canon dig. camera. I'm in the market for a Canon dig SLR right now, I want more lens flexibility than a compact can offer. Especially for moto shooting, most of the SLR's can shoot several shots per second.

I have the Canon A70. Love it. I bought it due to rave reviews on-line. It has features that tend to be found in more expensive cameras. Quick power up to first shot, good rapid shot features and a host of stuff I've not got into yet! The A80 is, I believe, the same setup but with higher resolution.

Two sites good for reviews are:-

http://www.dpreview.com

Cheers

The Canon dig SLR is on my wish list too. From everything I've read, its a great camera. I'm hoping in another six months or so the price will come down a little on them.

Thanks Keeto!

Option #10 on this page is the deal I am considering:

This was the package my friend bought and he loves it!

Looks like a superb deal! The upgraded memory alone would cost you more than what I posted!

I have an Olympus C730 and am very happy with it. Color is brilliant and very sharp. It has a full manual control mode with more stuff than I know how to use. Optical zoom is 10x which is equal to a 380mm zoom for a SLR. The computer can only digitally zoom which is a poor alternative to actual optical zoom. Also be very cautious buying cameras online. They usually sell GREY MARKET cameras if they are way cheaper than average. That means they are foriegn models and the manufactures will not touch them here for warrenty. If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is. They also might try and stick you with a $100-200 shipping fee, so be carefull and know exactly how much the total out the door price is shipped. Also make sure the model number matches the models on the manufactures website. Even the packaging is a different setup and can give it away as being a foriegn model. I suggest you read as much as you can on the model you decide on from the manufacturer website and see if they give you the clues to make sure your getting a US model. Good luck.

Sounds like you have already gotten some great recommendations. Just a few of my opinions:

1. Canon
2. Try to get a multi-burst mode. It really helps get good mx shots.
3. Avoid digital zoom like the plague

Can you clarify for the uninitiated (me) the different types of zoom features on a digital camera?
