Thanks for the pictures Pete......
As for the Americans, I see Mark Miller is running 3rd in the cars (27 mins down). Mark is from Arizona and was a Desert racer back in the 70 and 80's on a bike.

Robbie Gordon is currently 10th in a 2 wheel drive Hummer and has gotten stuck a bunch.

Also Jonah Street is running 7th as a privateer and is a Baja winner in the past. I have been lucky enough to pour gas for Jonah in Baja and he is one tough dude.

This is one tough Dakar and it's not over yet.

No Gas Gas this year, but the thought of a 450 twin Aprilla gets my blood pump'n Also have a look what happened to the female rider Annie Steel on the KTM, she managed to put it down a dug out shaft in the middle of the desert Luckily she bailed before the bike found the hole, a helicopter pulled it out.

That is one race I don't think I would want to try on a bike. Something about riding a poor handling, overweight tank through THAT terrain, definately sick!!! More power to them... How about Robbie Gordon? That guy rules!!! NASCAR, Trophy trucks, and Dakar, man I'd like to be in his shoes for a little while....

doesnt have the same erm is it nostalgia? now that its moved from africa after what 30 years? for me anyway. also the event is less desert sand and more hard surface so 450 more preferable i suppose. still a great event though glad no fatalities thus far.... i know i dont have the cojones for it! lol
yes v twin sounds tasty indeed but i believe engines get changed overnight and lots of money spent on keeping the bikes moving (all pro teams) so not a good event to base your next bike purchase on lol

Pete, it's Annie Seel and she is a one tough gal. Been trying to find out how she ended up in the Dakar this year.
I guess the mine shaft put her out but she wouldn't give up easily.
She raced on a team in the Baja 1000 a few years back and the team finished about 10th in the pro class. She also has raced Dakar before along with a bunch of other rally races.
Her web site is below if anyone is interested.

Yep, that is one tough race, not the place for a novice rider. One Aussie guy who went lasted 2 and a bit days, cost him 85 grand but as a clubman rider, had no hope of making it. Most of the top 50 are ex Pro riders of some sort, even they struggle at times. Robbie Gordon, what a character, they asked him if he'll be back. "dam right" he said, but not with a Hummer!
Here are some more high quality photos, just love that countryside
