Default Cousin needs help

My cousin currently has a drz125l 4 stroke bike. he rides the crap out of the bike and has outgrown it. He then picked up a used 1981 suzuki TS250 and rode that and has now outgrown the power of that too. He is a decent rider and doesnt know what to get for his next bike. He told me he rode a 1994 kawasaki kx125 and it was slow and he didnnt really like it. he also said the bike was beat ... it needed a new clutch, topend, reeds, etc. the bike was really beat up but that is the only 125 he has ridden. Now he is thinking about getting a 125 or 250 2 stroke. He is uneasy about the 125 because of the one he rode. He is 5'10 and 150lbs and wants a decent bike. He has never ridden a 250 so he isnt very sure what he should get. what would suit him better ? like i said he is a very decent rider and rides wide open trails, sand pits, and track. 125 or 250 ? do you think the 125 would have enough power for him ( bottom end...etc. ) just help me out as best as possible.

my 1973 ts250 had a factory rating of 23 horsepower at like 8000. id say a 125 would be fine, my 89 has good power. but the new 125's put out at least 35 now. the 250 might be to much but he isn't to much under weight for it. find somewhere where he can test ride a 125 and a 250 that are oth in good shape. i think he will be happy with the 125's power

I agree with kx i also have a kx125 it is a 97 and for a bigginer 2 stroke bike its great but i have outgrown it as well however on open places i would perfer the 250 or in my case im hunting a 500. I say the same as kx let him ride both that are nice. My 125 is still very powerful i just feel i want more. Good luck.

I would suggest a 125 or 250F just to keep him from scaring himself. Going to a good 125 or 250F will be a huge jump from any of the bikes he's rode. He sounds big enough to handle a 250 pinger, but I wouldn't go for one right away. He should be able to find a decent used 125 for a good price since most people want the thumpers now.

Is that bad?

My first 250 scared me so bad I bought a second 250, and a 500 motor for the first. Then I bought a 490, just to make sure.

I figure I'll never be constipated this way.

Seriously though, given that he rides "wide open trails and sand pits" as you said, I'd skip the 125 and get the 250. He's clearly "got the fever" already so even if it scares him at first, it's not like he's going to quit riding. He's going to keep at it and the 250 will be fine for wide-open spaces. And in sand, power is key and more is better.

That's not a bad thing. That's a good thing. I went from a KE100 to a YZ250 and am glad I didn't stop in the middle.

I agree. I had a 185 fourstroke and got a kx 250 when I was almost 13. At that time I was 5'9 and 125lbs.

Thats right Im right under 180 standing 5'10 and I like my 125 buy am hoping to get a four stroke soon.
I think that the reason he said the 125 was slow was because he couldn't keep it on the pipe, not saying anything about his skills though I think that was the problem. Ever consider 250f?
